The Killing of Rouzan al-Najjar

On the evening of 1 June 2018, a large group of Palestinian protesters gathered at one of the five principal protest sites, near the village of Khuzaa. At 6:31pm, a shot was fired from beyond the border fence into the crowd. The bullet killed Rouzan al-Najjar, 21, a volunteer medic. Two of her fellow medics, Mohammed Shafee and Rami Abo Jazar, were wounded at the same time. The death of al-Najjar, who was widely revered among the protesters, sent shockwaves throughout Palestine. Forensic Architecture was commissioned by the New York Times to undertake spatial analysis of the scene of al-Najjar’s death. By digitally recreating the protest site from video evidence, we used the precise location of the three gunshot victims as a means to derive the trajectory of the bullet, and trace its ‘cone of fire’ back to its origin, a sniper’s berm at the border fence. -FA

Mrityubhoj: The Death Feast

Hindus celebrate 'Mrityubhoj', or the Death Feast, on the 13th day after a cremation as a remembrance for the departed soul, and also as a ritual to help the soul find heavenly abode. However, today this practice has become akin to a status symbol and a reflection of a family's social standing. This film takes a fly on the wall approach, following a family in the Chambal district in India, as they get ready to organize a death feast following the demise of their father. Caught between tradition, societal pressure, and prestige on the one hand and on the other hand, activists trying to put a lid on the pernicious practice of Mrityubhoj, especially for the poor, it tries to capture their predicament of being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Pierre Soulages / Michel Lorblanchet: Moments d’origine

An interview between the painter Pierre Soulages and the prehistorian Michel Lorblanchet about cave art and the origins of art. Pierre Soulages and Michel Lorblanchet explored the most important sites of prehistoric art together. On this day in 1996, they met in the Cougnac cave (Lot region) to admire some of its wonders. Jean-Luc Bouvret's film presents the exchange of powerful and unique perspectives on the first "artists" of humankind. During the visit, a profound complementarity of perceptions emerges between the painter and the prehistorian. Where one tries to analyze and understand, the other strives to "perceive/see."

Never Again - Amerikas Jugend gegen den Waffenwahn

Newtown, Orlando, Las Vegas—each represents a mass murder in the US, with at least 28 lives lost, using legally acquired weapons. These tragedies seem to occur more frequently, with politicians seemingly inactive. This changed on Valentine’s Day 2018, when a shooting at MSD High School in Parkland, Florida, killed 14 students and three faculty members. In response, young people organised the largest gun violence protests since the Vietnam War, demanding stricter gun laws and a ban on AR-15 rifles. Director Sebastian Bellwinkel documented this movement. While mass shootings are a significant issue, they account for only 1% of the 30,000 gun-related deaths annually. Some states have altered gun laws due to the protests, but the conservative Trump administration’s stance on making firearms harder to access remains unclear.

Meine Welt ist die Musik

Christian Bruhn has virtually set the Federal Republic of Germany to music. He is one of the most successful German composers and music producers in the pop industry. Bruhn's music, on the other hand, is well known: whether it's pop songs like "Marmor Stein und Eisen bricht," theme tunes for "Heidi," "Timm Thaler," and "Captain Future," or advertising jingles from Maggi to Milka: Christian Bruhn has written more than 2,500 compositions. This documentary is the infectiously upbeat portrait of a man who has accompanied and touched people across generations with his music since the early 1960s.

The Voice of Innocence

"The Voice of Innocence" is a documentary that shows how, starting in 1959, the Cuban Revolution put into practice a comprehensive and universal policy of safeguarding the rights of the child, even under the multiple difficulties resulting from the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States more than six decades ago.
