Burning Man: A Whale in the Desert

Burning Man is no run-of-the-mill festival. For one week of every year, thousands of people descend upon Black Rock, a desert north of Nevada for this unique celebration of music and contemporary art. Each participant must respect the 10 founding principles of the event, ranging from welcoming and helping everyone to prioritizing self-expression and immediate experience. The rules also insist on leaving no trace of the celebrations upon the desert. The documentary follows an artistic project, ‘The Space Whale’, from its conception to its completion. Filmed through immersion in the festival, close to a group of wacky artists, it presents the human and technological challenges that the team faces, but also demonstrating the spirit of the festival, a truly transient laboratory of new ideas and utopias, brought to life by Matt Schultz.

Joan Mitchell: Departures

"Details of paintings by Joan Mitchell undergo Eternalizing. The process introduces emphatic flicker that helps create illusions of depth, even for a single eye. But flicker is not for everyone and should be avoided by those with unusual brain conditions. Abstract-Expressionism was a way out of thinking of WWII and Mitchell was among the best of its practitioners. Paint is what happens in her work, inspired by nature but transfigured and with no obvious reference to objects. Her great range of paint applications, however, do invite the imagining of them in depth. Imagined in depth, yes but not the all-too-convincing illusion show here." - Ken Jacobs

The Spirits Just Understand Our Language

Only six elders of the Manoki population in the Brazilian Amazon still speak the indigenous language, an imminent risk of losing the means by which they communicate with their spirits. Although this is a difficult subject, the younger ones decide to narrate with images and words their version of this long history of interaction with non-indigenous, talking about their pains, challenges and desires.
