The Last Village

In Gansu Province, the Minquin community struggles with the affects of desertification. Surrounded by the Tengri and Badanjilin deserts, the villages of the region are beginning to be engulfed underneath sand dunes. Many villagers decide to leave their homeland. However, several elders have chosen to stay. They prefer instead to remain close to their roots and try to fight against desertification by planting trees. Following the story of these peoples, we are immersed in one of the worldwide ecological battles of the 21st Century. Desertification is a problem that largely overwhelms the Chinese frontiers. But on a broader scale, many environmental specialists claim that one third of the earth's surfaces are threatened by this phenomenon. It is a story we should all heed.

Documentary of AKB48: AKB48+1+10

We’re back for round two! Much like “AKB48+1”, this documentary goes through the English alphabet talking about a different aspect of the group for each letter. While still featuring tons of behind the scenes footage, it focuses more on member relations and the events of the past year (2012). Again, this documentary is a brilliant look into the diversity of the AKB48 experience. There’s so much about this group to learn, and the two bonus “AKB48+1” and “AKB48+1+10” documentaries provide a detailed look in a fun way.

It Has Already Been Ended Before You Can See the End

A film about “the end”. The end has already started, and ended. We call it “the end” in order to perceive it and make it “visible”, but it had already passed when we called it “the end” , or “the end” is always penetrating the present, so we can not recognize time of the end. The end has already started, and ended. The disaster of an earthquake and nuclear crisis in 2011 Japan affected a lot when it comes to making artworks. This work is the first film of a series called PIXCANNING. The word “Pixcanning” is coined from “pix (picture / pixel)” and “scanning” . It is a method used to scoop up (scanning) elements that pass through the meshes of perception (pixel) when images (picture) appear or images are constructed.

To Turn a Door of Memories

What is this incessant noise that keeps ringing? It sounded like the roar of the wind, the hum of passing cars, or the sea breeze sweeping through the streets. It felt unfamiliar. The lights of the night, the towering and intricate buildings illuminated by smooth LED surfaces, come alive, dancing with faces and bodies. Seoul is a whirlwind—a devouring maw, a cacophony, a rapid stream of images that leaves your senses struggling to find focus. And so, I set out to trace this intriguing sound. One of them comes from the roof of my home. It originates from the wind and evokes the repetitive beat of a drum. On se souvient des pas begins here. Through a geographic and temporal journey as the camera transitions from one scene to another, the film encounters Korea's history and traditions. This is a kind of journal—an attempt to grasp the essence of this land where I lived for ten months.

Koudelka

This is a documentary filmed in a subjective perspective. Without any commentary, the film records, in the switches and transitions of the faces, the gamut and track of emotions and vision of the author in enjoying the photographs by Koudelka—from the scenes of life in “Gypsies”, to the conflicts in “Invasion”, further to the still images in “Exiles”, and finally focused on desolately dignified “Chaos”. The four chapters of the film echo the four photo albums of Koudelka. With the indoor CD player playing the music by Shostakovich, the invasion of the landscape without the windows, intermingled with the background noise, complicates the ambient circumstances of the film and renders an immediate sense of urgency and relevance.

養護学校はあかんねん!

This is a documentary in which the camera's gaze is surrounded by a consciousness of staring, and this consciousness brings about a clear stance in approaching the subject. The distance between the able-bodied and the disabled is made clearer here by depicting it from the side of the disabled, and the film's title, "Why are schools for the disabled wrong? The title of the film, "Why are schools for the disabled wrong? This straightforward attempt at the most basic of documentary filmmaking, how to bring the subject to oneself, succeeds in capturing the full power of film itself, not just within the genre of documentary. The film is a success.

We

The voices in this film are all conscientious citizens doing their utmost to improve the state of their nation. Their ethos is: “Where affairs of state are concerned, we cannot stand idly by and watch.” And yet the reward for their concern is a lifetime spent in political turmoil, years of periodic intimidation and surveillance. This film illustrates the perils of seeking freedom in a time of darkness, in a time when critique requires transformation. It depicts the harsh realities faced by three generations of activists—young, middle-aged and elderly– and allows us to better understand their anxieties, hopes, despairs and above all, their persistence.

Transit Circle

Hanqi and her friends drift through the suburban area of Hangzhou. Strolling through the concrete and neon-lit landscape of the city, they experience the transformations it undergoes daily. As they drift night after night, they become the living interface of a metamorphosis that cannot be perceived or understood if not by becoming part of it. Thus, Hanqi and her friends catch fleeting glimpses of beauty in an environment that most people would only perceive as alienating, hostile or cold. Like an ambient composition by Brian Eno or Philip Glass, the film moves through minimal variations, completely immersed in its nocturnal beat. Space becomes time.
