El Mar La Mar

An immersive and enthralling journey through the Sonoran Desert on the U.S.-Mexico border, El Mar La Mar weaves together harrowing oral histories from the area with hand-processed 16mm images of flora, fauna and items left behind by travelers. Subjects speak of intense, mythic experiences in the desert: A man tells of a fifteen-foot-tall monster said to haunt the region, while a border patrolman spins a similarly bizarre tale of man versus beast. A sonically rich soundtrack adds to the eerie atmosphere as the call of birds and other nocturnal noises invisibly populate the austere landscape. Emerging from the ethos of Harvard's Sensory Ethnography Lab, J.P. Sniadecki's attentive documentary approach mixes perfectly with Joshua Bonnetta's meditations on the materiality of film. Together, they've created an experience of the border region like nothing you've seen, heard or felt before.

The Debaters

Fatou, Zouhoudi, Assia, Gabriel...are 14 years old. The school they're attending is nested in the project of the suburbs of Paris. They've decided to form a debate club where they can discuss about what matters most to them: gender equality, immigration, voting. We're filming them during a year, in this democratic forum of their own making, from their timid beginnings to the final debate at the National Assembly. They discover freedom of conscience and freedom of speech. Here, everything's in play: their own identities, their nascent opinions, how they fit in the world and why they want to be heard.

Abu Dhabi: The Island Kingdom of the Sheikhs

The Emirate Abu Dhabi was founded on an island, surrounded by a mangrove belt. In the meantime and many skyscrapers and artificially created islands later, the town has become one of the world's most modern metropolises. Here I Am...Here You Are

Eccomi ... Eccoti unfolds as a virtual road trip navigating between Italy and Lebanon. Conditioned to live in a long-distance relationship with his partner because of strict European visa regulations, the director patches together the shared moments in an attempt to create a possible day-to-day reality for their couple. With a lyrical, ambient soundscape set atop a dreamy, atmospheric visual style that oscillates between still photography and moving images, the film explores what it means to be gay in contemporary Beirut and existential discomfort that blocks one from reaching a sense of complete-ness. Does such in-completeness have to do, in particular, with being gay? Or is it related to a grander malaise endemic to the human condition?

Chronicles of the Time of Troubles

“The film is about one of the most terrible and difficult periods in the history of Russia of the 20th century, about the 90s of the last century. For many people it was a shock. The Empire collapsed, human relations and moral values collapsed. Crime and bandits were everywhere. And ordinary people were concerned about how to survive. This period was called perestroika. The people call this time a troubled time. The film reviews social processes from within, not from the outside propaganda side. Much for the modern spectator seems strange, it seems phantasmagoric, but it was so.” -V. Eisner

Stan

Do you ever wonder what is hidden behind a face? What passions lie behind a person you would otherwise pass by without a thought? In a time of division, a time of mistrust, confusion and anguish it’s time to start asking questions, to be curious and compassionate and discover the common nature that connects us all. Words. One cold, winters night in Leeds, England, we discovered Stan. We discovered love. We discovered anger. We discovered hidden talents. We discovered togetherness. We discovered poetry and passion. We discovered diversity. We discovered fish and chips. We discovered Stan's Fisheries. Extraordinary things exist in ordinary places. In a world of hope, a world of pain, a world of both tragedy and happiness, if you have the words, there's always a chance that you'll find the way to connect with people, everyday people. In times of division we must remember that we are far more united than things which divide us. As the Jamaican national motto says "Out of many, one people".

Red White Black & Blue Odyssey

Students from South Los Angeles fly to New Zealand to play Rugby. A sport that is increasingly popular in the United States, the tour provides these students and the Kiwi teams they battle a rare opportunity to dig beneath the surface of things. On the field, troubled histories melt away, and we see boys rise as men; girls lead as women stronger for facing up to a challenge. 'Red, White, Black and Blue' provides a sensitive take on a rough game: it blends on-field triumph with off-field tragedy. If the spirit of these teens is any indication, the Olympic Rugby Gold Medal - currently held by the United States since it was last an Olympic sport in 1924 - may just be defensible after all.

Antúnez House

The devastating Chilean earthquake of 2010 damaged over 370,000 homes. The city of Talca was near its epicentre, leaving many historic neighbourhoods in ruins. CASA ANTÚNEZ is an intimate portrait of one beloved home in Talca, and how its destruction reveals a divided family. When the mother sells the adobe ruins to her architect son José Luis, his brothers and cousins are sceptical about his intentions. Over three years, we witness their psychological process of losing a childhood home as they confront the future of its land. CASA ANTÚNEZ is a poetic homage to the very notion of ‘home’ after a disaster.

The House or a Machine for Living in

People speak in conversations and banal situations, a loose, uncompromising, though sometimes tense and timid speech. It is these voices that tell minimal stories that the image unmasks, multiplies or breathes: universes that are people-house (or house-people) are anchored in boxes, bodies, secrets, desires, looks or in the ephemerality of the stories. In this flow, we access unstable territories, places of being in permanent construction - the inner house of each one.

Impressio in-urbe (#1 Bologna)

“Impressio in-urbe” goes through the textures of the urban space: the materiality of architectures, corners and prospectives, the drawings of pavings, the squares, the bricks; it’s a detailed decomposition of the city’s “cloak” from which the broken matter emerges, seemingly immovable but in a continuous connection, in the centuries, inhabited by its moltitude.”Impressio” is the print, the mark which all things and every gesture leave of itself, the “identikit” (and vivisection) of the city’s space and time, which gives back to us its view.
