Maos Sangrentas translates to Bloody Hands in English, and that's just what this gruesome Brazilian melodrama delivers. The story begins when a gang of dangerous convicts escape from a penal colony. With the police in hot pursuit, the escapees cut a gory swath through the countryside. As his comrades are killed off one by one, the leader of the group descends into gibbering madness. In contrast to this, a subplot develops involving the least dangerous of the escapees, who murdered his wife in a peak of self-righteous rage and is now seriously in doubt about the wisdom of his deed. Principal scenes reworked in 1962 to make the film The Violent and the Damned (q.v.).

Marcos finds Julia on a barren road and offers her shelter in a mansion belonging to his mistress. He discovers that she is running away from a psychotic husband and falls madly in love with her. When the caretaker of the mansion discovers a ransom is being offered to whoever finds the young woman, he tells her whereabouts to the husband, who ruthlessly pursues the pair.

On a small coastal town, a light-keeper lives in total seclusion after his wife's passing. Two friends grow together in the same neighborhood but, as adults, take different paths in life. One becomes an honest worker, and the other gets strayed. But the good guy's sister has an affair with her brother's friend, and is much abused by him. Her brother wants revenge. But when he sees him in danger, some time later, he must decide which is the stronger feeling: the former friendship, or his wish for revenge.
