Robert Newman's History of Oil

Stand-up comedian Robert Newman gets to grips with the wars and politics of the last hundred years, from WWI through to the 2003 invasion of Iraq; but rather than adhering to the history we were fed at school, this show places oil centre stage as the cause of all commotion. This innovative history programme is based around Robert Newman's stand-up act and supported by resourceful archive sequences and stills with satirical impersonations of historical figures from Mayan priests to Archduke Ferdinand.

Having discovered his brother's affair with Lisa, Brecht sets up a plan to kill Germano and take his place. The shock makes Erina dumb. Bercht's persecution of Lisa soon turns the woman mad, while Lailo, wandering in the villa's surroundings, vainly tries to find the key to the mystery. A psychiatrist, Louis, firmly believes Lailo's madness is caused by her inner anguish and seems confident in her recovery. But he's wrong: the demented woman kills Katia and then throws herself out of a window. Brecht takes back his own identity, but his actions will have further tragic consequences...

Atrophy Portraits III

The history of traditional portraiture was about status and branding. With Atrophy Portraits we break down the layers of constructed perfection. These films are an exploration of power and submission, how the boundaries between those roles might initially seem fixed but can be more fluid. What it means to be the subject, to be observed and to meet that gaze. This film is a portrait, designed to be watched on a portrait screen, for example your phone. A portrait needs a frame and our screens are our frames.

Death in Mombasa

It's been a year since Moritz Wagner and his daughter Aluna turned their backs on Kenya and moved to Hamburg. They searched in vain for Farrah, Moritz's wife and Aluna's mother. Moritz's strenuous, sometimes traumatic job as a war photographer had put a lot of strain on their marriage. Farrah took some time off and disappeared without a trace. Now news reaches Moritz from the Kenyan police that his wife has been recovered dead from her car in Kenya. Shortly after, Farrah's sister Pascale suggests that Farrah was not the victim of an accident, but was murdered. Moritz sets off for Kenya. But when he wants to meet his sister-in-law, she dies in front of him. Moritz is now considered a suspect and has to justify himself to the Kenyan police and flee. Together with Caroline, a shirt-sleeved used car saleswoman and good friend of Farrah, Moritz sets out to find the secret behind Farrah's death. The trail leads them both to the Congo.
