He comes upon Nat Perry, a young settler, who is conveying his household goods across the burning sands. Perry has just taken a drink from his precious canteen when the Indian falls at his feet and implores a little water. The young pioneer heartlessly turns him over with his foot and leaves him to die.

John Preston, ranch owner, owes a large sum of money to Don Jose Praz. The Don's rascal son, Raphael, with the aid of an accomplice, steals some of Preston's cattle. Raphael loves Kate Preston and urges his father to press the matter of the notes as a lever to win Preston's consent to the marriage. Kate's heart, however, belongs to the foreman, Jack Deering. Unable to force Preston's consent, Raphael kidnaps the girl and carries her to a lone cabin. It is the contrast of these machines to the broad landscape and animal life that digs at this mythological space and questions what other meanings might be created.
