HELL OF A HEARTACHE

Rob Burson wrote, directed and stars in the 2020 indie drama HELL OF A HEARTACHE. The film introduces us to Bobby Thompson, a musician whose fleeting success in country music has trailed off to small town bars where the alcoholic singer shakily holds things together. Barely responsible for himself, Bobby's hazy life comes into sharp focus when a old fan stops by and leaves her twelve year old daughter with him, swearing he's the father. We see father and potential daughter cautiously size each other up in his beat-up motel apartment while they wait the 10 days for the DNA results in the mail.

Don Daredevil Rides Again

Stock-footage from Republic Pictures' earlier Zorro serials was served up once again in this 12 chapter cliffhanger, this time without the financially strapped studio having to credit Zorro creator Johnston McCulley or pay any royalties. Zorro simply became "Don Daredevil" (Ken Curtis), a foppish Easterner by day turned masked avenger by night. Like his not too distant relative, Don wore his disguise in order to battle nasty Roy Barcroft who, under a forged Spanish land grant, attempts to take over the surrounding ranch land.

Down Mexico Way

Like 1940's Melody Ranch, the 1941 Gene Autry vehicle Down Mexico Way was designed as a "special", to be promoted separately from Autry's regular B-western series as an A-picture attraction. The story gets under way when a pair of con artists, Gibson (Sidney Blackmer) and Allen (Joe Sawyer), breeze into the town of Sage City claiming to be movie producers. The two scoundrels promise to film a movie in the little burg on the condition that the townsfolk pony up the necessary production fees.
