A Vision for the Valley: The Untold Story of the Meewasin Logo

After noticing the Meewasin logo throughout Saskatoon, filmmaker Devon Rumpel set out to answer that question. A Vision for the Valley explores the rare longevity of a modernist logo and the ideas that brought it to life. The film traces the origins of the Meewasin Valley Authority before turning its focus to Vic Sotropa, the logo’s designer, whose largely under-the-radar career has had an outsized impact in Saskatchewan. What begins as an inquiry into graphic design expands into a broader reflection on legacy, place, and the enduring power of human vision.

Life Forgotten

Evocative yet playful, Life Forgotten asks, how does everyday entertainment bring people together and act as a catalyst for social change? Situating archival film in parallel with reenactment, the film conjures up New York’s Lower East Side in the early years of the twentieth century, it centers on a real storefront cinema, Frank Seiden’s Variety Theater. Here silent movies were anything but. Frank and his sons improvised dialog for the films and sang Yiddish ballads to an audience that didn’t hesitate to join in or argue back. It was a welcoming space for women and the film follows a group of radical young garment workers who gather here to figure out how to fight for women’s rights and change their world.

Remember My Song

The tavern "Jablan" existed in the 1980s and was located in a small village, Jugovo Polje, in Croatia, SFRY. "Jablan" was a symbol of "brotherhood and equality" for its owners, guests, musicians, and waiters. It was a place where people of different generations and education gathered - from workers and peasants to doctors, even music and sports stars of the '80s, it was a place where nationality and religious affiliation played no role. Nevertheless, the first shooting between Serbs and Croats took place in "Jablan", which heralded the war in Croatia and ended "Jablan's carefree days". The film protagonists reconstruct the events, from the day the tavern was created, to its destruction, witnessing how a place of love and joy became an object of hatred and destruction within a few months.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

In 1997, the feminist punk poet and experimental writer Kathy Acker interviewed the Spice Girls for the Guardian (not, as has passed into legend, US Vogue). The Spice Girls were at the height of their fame, flicking peace signs at us from every teenage girl’s bedroom wall on posters ripped from magazines. Acker on the other hand was an unapologetic weirdo in the same vein as William S Burroughs, writing books so filled with sex, incest and violence that West Germany banned Blood and Guts in High School for being too pornographic.
