Verdi: Simon Boccanegra

The ambiguities of Verdi’s theatre are particularly clear in his baritone roles, among which is that of Boccanegra, corsair turned doge of Genoa and the troubled observer of the conflicts that tore apart 14th century landowners and peasants. An eminently political opera in which power struggles are interwoven with family conflicts, Simon Boccanegra echoes the life of its composer – the man who championed the cause of Italian unification and overcame the loss of his wife and children.

Power

Titled Power, Tretti's sophomore film was a sort of Mel Brooks' History of the World, in which Tretti explored the history of mankind from one precise point of view: how the powerful ruled over the weak. A man confused as the God of Fire in prehistory; Jesus and Muhammad deciding who must eat what and when because of a power no one has seen; Tiberius Gracchus killed by the senate because he was fighting for the people. Tretti had a bullet for everyone. He loved to unmask those who claimed to be on the side of the less fortunate, showing the three powers - military, commercial and agricultural - sitting on three thrones and chatting on how they can suck life out of men and keep power tight in their hands.

Villa Visconti Borromeo Litta

The film richly illustrates the history of one of the most famous and lavish Italian pleasure villas, located in the town of Lainate in Lombardy, not far from Milan. Using onsite documentation, costumed reenactments, interviews with prominent curators and historians, architectural models, and computer graphics, Villa Visconti Borromeo Litta portrays centuries of Italian art and architectural history in terms of stylistic expression. The film also explores the social, familial, and political milieux—not least of which is the chronicle of Pirro I Visconti Borromeo, count of Brebbia, the creator of this place of art and delights, a romantic, a patron, and a sophisticated man of culture in Milan during the late sixteenth century. The villa’s wonders are many—its famous Nymphaeum, greenhouses, palaces, sculptures, frescoes, fountains, and water features among them.

Verdi: Simon Boccanegra

A tragic tale in which love and filial sentiment battle in a political intrigue around the fascinating character of Simon, a privateer become doge: Simon Boccanegra is one of Verdi’s greatest operas, over which floats the shadow of his admiration for Shakespeare. For this captivating and moving score, the Dijon Bourgogne Orchestra has called upon one of the great Verdi specialists, Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, whose Traviata in 2011 demonstrated his intimate and precise knowledge of the Italian master’s style, and the German stage director Philipp Himmelmann, a regular at Unter den Linden in Berlin and the great European stages.

L'Orologio di Romolo

A ten minutes short film that takes its inspiration from a real letter (from the collection “Lettere di condannati a morte della Resistenza italiana”) written during World War II’s Nazi-Fascist regime by Romolo Iacopini, a captured and life sentenced partisan by the German SS squadrons, to his mother Maria. Protagonist of the film, the woman in the fictional story takes on the task entrusted by the son in the heartfelt real letter: collecting the man’s wallet, held at a police department, and watch, left to a priest. Shaken by her loss, the woman is now deprived of the thing she holds most dear, but slowly realises it is somehow still living...

Piccolo film decomposto

This extremely short film is dedicated to chronophotography, which—as is well known—is the prelude to cinema. As with one of my earlier films dedicated to Muybridge (The Naked Killer, 1982), this one was excavated from books and catalogues, that is, from typographic ink. I tried, in a certain sense, to reanimate the inanimable as does the photographer Duane Michals, having only, sometimes, three or four frames. I found older stroboscopic technology as well as more contemporary flicker effects to be very helpful here and there. I attempted to realize the cinematic identification of Skladanowksy with Avedon; contaminations, precisely, between creators of films and creators of photography, contemporary or not. It is surprising to see Michals, a contemporary photographer, bearing such a strong cinematographic resemblance to Londe, the proto-filmmaker. I hope, at least, to have told the story of their direct commingling, as if by a single secret author.

Alba Meloni. Stella nelle mie stanze

An apartment on the Tiber riverfront, in the center of Rome. The director lives here, where Stella lived until her death. Stella is the nom de guerre of Alba Meloni, a partisan courier who, at a very young age, joined the Resistance in the capital. After Liberation, she became an official of the Italian Communist Party and spent the last 30 years of her life in the Testaccio neighborhood, where she is still a very popular figure. The director follows in her footsteps, talking to her, collecting her memories, capturing fragments of her daily life and experiences: at home, in the neighborhood, and on the streets of Rome, where the girl once carried weapons in a straw bag and planted nails on the roads to stop German trucks. It is a journey through time and the city, during which Alba/Stella's individual story intertwines with our collective history.

Pneuma

Raw materials such as wood and iron are brought back to life by the passage of air, thus generating sound, music: a magical combination of science and imagination, a physical fact that nevertheless conceals a mysterious aspect for the listener. The mechanical reproduction of this miraculous breath is ensured by skilled hands, which care for, build and restore the individual parts of the musical instrument, giving it a new lease of life. The centuries-old knowledge of the art of organ building, handed down from generation to generation, finds its home in a workshop in the district of Segariu, a small town in the Marmilla region, at the gateway to central Sardinia. Beyond the craftsmanship process there seems to be an invisible and unstoppable motion that survives the millennia: the pursuit of the breath of nature, the wind, which for the ancient Greeks (Πνεúµα) was also the spirit.

Langobardi - Alboino e Romans

This movie is an innovative docufilm about history of Lombard with an interaction between cinema and historical disclosure. It is focused on the story of Alboin, the first Lombard king arrived in Italy with his population and the foundation of the village of Romans. This village was an important military garrison of the Duchy of Friul and also it is important for the archeological finds (one of the largest Italian Lombard necropolises). On 551 A.D. after a great victory against Gepids, the figure of Alboin as hero strongly emerged. Years of glory and deeds followed him until his fateful fate in Verona on 572 A.D., when he was killed after only few years of reigns, then his myth was born. In the midst of the events of this legendary king will be shown, innovative images and strong emotional impact, where you will see how the Lombard people lived in Romans, an important crossroad of the Friulian plain where men and women developed a village that still exists.
