Eddie Fischer is in a clinic to lose weight. For five days he is given nothing but lemon juice and mineral water. But on the sixth day he is supposed to be given yoghurt and crispbread, but just as he is making his emergency calls, the criminal Charlie Krumm enters and threatens Eddie Fischer, as he himself is not on a completely legal path. Eddie Fischer has no choice but to grant the criminal asylum. But when the police arrive, it turns into chaos and the two of them have to come up with a few ideas to avoid being found out.

The ambassador of the Kingdom of Luvaria orders Baron Belmar, his attaché, to win the interest of Mona, wife of the war minister, who opposes a treaty the ambassador very much wants signed. After many narrow escapes from exposure of the personal intrigue, he manages to sway the attentions of Mona, who persuades the war minister to sign the treaty, thus gaining Belmar an appointment as ambassador to Peru and Greta as his wife.

Neumeier's dance version of the Shakespeare play about the trials and tribulations of love has lost none of its freshness over three decades after its premiere. With his selection of music, which ranges from Mendelssohn Bartholdy to György Ligeti to traditional barrel organ music, John Neumeier shows his dramaturgical sensibility by integrating three different musical styles into his choreographic narrative.
