Disappearance

On a cold winter’s night in modern Tehran, a couple of young lovers run into a serious problem, and they have just a few hours to come up with a solution. They go from hospital to hospital in search for help, but none of the hospitals will admit the young woman and provide her with the medical attention she desperately requires. While they try hard to find a way to solve the problem, they have to hide what is happening from their parents. Moreover, their relationship is facing a crisis and will suffer dire consequences. Caught between conservative traditions and modern day desires, the couple must face their uncertain future.

The average person’s head has up to 100,000 hairs. Each strand may be unique in length and texture but they are said to bear our memories of sorrow and worry. Neighbors come to the old shop “Barber’s Time” to part with both their hair and bad memories. Although Cantonese style haircutting is on the slippery slope to extinction, barber shop owner Hoi-chuen wishes for his son Cheung-fat to manage the shop. Aspiring to be a writer like J. D. Salinger instead, Cheung-fat takes over “Barber’s Time” when his father had an accident. Just like his father, Cheung-fat develops rapport with the customers and provides guidance. His own life also turns around when a runaway girl comes to the shop. A magical heartwarming tale of community support and kindness, the short features Kaki Shum from the film “Weeds of Fire”.

The story takes place in August 1991, when in the former USSR there was an unsuccessful attempt of a political coup led by the Soviet intelligence services and the Soviet Union collapsed. However, this political struggle is only a background for dramatic events that occurred with the main characters of the film in a Soviet government villa in Crimea, where they were spending their summer holidays. The nightmare of their relationship reflects present and future nightmares of their country.

The collection—taking the concept of time as a unifying theme—depicts the economic, political, and social alienations and contradictions that create, compound, and structure issues as wide-ranging as poverty, class stratification, and homeless; familial distress; spousal abuse; and natural disaster.

The Last Walk: Alaska

A sister sets out into the unforgiving land to find her sister, who has been banished from their community for negligence that ended tragically. The banished sister has battled depression since the great loss, causing her to isolate herself from her community. Knowing her sister lacks the skills to survive on her own, the sister attempts to forgive her and bring her home to continue their lives. The Last Walk short film collective is outcome of International Sámi Film Institute’s initiative Arctic Film Circle. Filmmakers from the circumpolar areas scripted a common Indigenous story and adapted the story to their communities in Alaska, Northwest Territories and Kalaallit Nunaat. The Last Walk – three short films tell an universal story that simultaneously highlights the common experiences that Indigenous People have undertaken.

In the years when the death penalty was still legal in Turkey, Arkın was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. Cüneyt, on the other hand, was imprisoned in the same prison for a minor injury offense. However, he frequently received solitary confinement for standing up against injustices in the prison. Arkın also visited the solitary cell from time to time. On the day Cüneyt was to be released, Arkın’s sentence was to be executed. Two days before this, the two prisoners were handcuffed together and transferred to the city center. However, Cabbar, the real perpetrator of the crime for which Arkın was sentenced to death, planned an attack on the transfer vehicle to prevent Arkın from speaking before his execution.

Blood Relative

After a botched robbery, a local crime syndicate sends a rookie enforcer to take care of a loose end. When the hit goes sideways and his civilian girlfriend ends up missing, her brother, Rodd, a mild-mannered guidance counselor, conducts an exhaustive search through the city to find her.
