1980: The Unforgettable Day

There is HWAPYONG Restaurant with full of hopes of the family of three generations. Grandfather, the first-generation owner, and the first son, the second-generation owner, who lives as a fugitive after being branded as a communist and his wife and Cheol-soo’s mom who has to work hard by juggling work and family without complaint. The second son, Cheol-soo’s uncle, who sometimes acts like a child with an excuse of being the second son but loves Cheol-soo more than anyone and seriously cares about the restaurant. To the third generation, young Cheol-soo, family is the most precious. By the time when ‘Seoul Spring’ longing for democratization came to nothing due to ‘Retreat from Seoul Station’ in 1980, there were a series of peaceful protests in Gwangju, Jeolla Province. In warm May, a large dark cloud is looming over HWAPYONG Restaurant, the home and everything of this ordinary family of Cheol-soo, in the middle of Gwangju.

The film tells the story of the male protagonist Song En (played by actor Xie Mengwei) who gave up his identity as a police officer in order to destroy the dark forces that were poisoning the local area and the deeper people behind them. At the same time, he was burdened with the revenge of his father's murder and the betrayal of a traitor in the police force. Infamy, he lurked in the dark forces and became a claw of a criminal organization. He embarked on a lonely road of competing with the dark forces alone, surrounded by dangers. In the end, he cooperated with the police inside and outside to break the dark story.

Dream On

A commercial short film co-presented by FIRST Film Festival and Vivo, revolves around the protagonist Zhuang Shu in director's previous TV mini-series "Why Try to Change Me Now", focusing on the northwestern small city of Qingcheng in the 1990s, telling the story of the unexpected encounter between two pairs of fathers and sons on the Spring Festival. This brief reunion made the children grow up a little. "Whether facing family responsibilities or facing the challenges of life, we are still led by the universal desire of 'dreaming'. Dreams are the instinct of existence and also guide us to our truest self." Director Zhang Dalei explained the meaning of the title.

Ikigai

'Ikigai' follows Mayumi, a 9-year-old girl, as she tries to find balance in her Japanese identity and American nationality. Hanako, her mother who celebrates their culture through Nihon Buyo, sees Mayumi's new school as an opportunity to share their culture with the white students. When Mayumi is assigned a show-and-tell presentation, she takes it as a chance to prove to her classmates that she is not that different from them. But, that plan is soon ruined when Hanako unexpectedly shows up and teaches the class a Japanese dance, embarrassing and exposing Mayumi's cultural background. After coming home ashamed of her mother and Japanese identity, Mayumi receives guidance from her parents that motivates her to return to school and redo her show and tell in a way that would make her ancestors proud.

In "Trust Me", a genre-bending short documentary, a young woman uses humour and compassion to share her moving and deeply personal story of coming to terms with her mental health condition. When she starts exhibiting atypical and extreme behaviour, her loved ones trick her into hospitalisation against her will. She is diagnosed with bipolar disorder which starts her challenging journey of self-acceptance, confronting internalised and societal stigma, and learning to trust herself and others again.

Lola Blue

Lola Blue is a talented comedian on the rise to success, regularly performing in Naples' trendiest clubs, with a next big break: to be the star of "Crepapelle," a TV show destined to be the pinnacle of her career. However, her impetuous and rage-prone temperament causes her problems, triggering public episodes of wrath that draw criticism and a court order forcing her to participate in a five-week group therapy program. She arrives at Sacred Circle, a retreat in the midst of nature in Umbria. Initially, Lola feels completely out of place and attempts to sabotage the experience; however, just as she begins to find serenity, a call from her manager prompts her to return to the stage. After an intimate night with Ravi, the retreat leader, Lola returns to Naples. Despite her renewed success, she decides to give up her race for fame to seek a deeper existential balance.
