It was a sad day for Swiss history when the airline's fleet was grounded on 2 October 2001. "Grounding" is set during the last days of the doomed airline, and tells the story of manager Mario A. Corti's unhappy fate, the last, unlucky CEO at the traditional airline company, as well as of all those nameless people who lost almost everything in the maelstrom of Swissair's downfall: their job, home and their belief in Switzerland.

On the surface a straightforward tale of the search for a buried treasure, the film is a textbook example of German expressionism, with the passions of the protagonists conveyed as much through symbolism as action.

The relationship between mother and son implies a tragedy.

The Irish musician Oisín (Tadgh Murphy) and his band come to Berlin for a few gigs. They are excited about the city and its legendary nightlife. As they unpack their things at the hostel, Oisín finds an envelope with money from his father in his pocket. Later, at their concert, everything seems to be going well - the boys are in a good mood, the audience is going along - when Oisín suddenly freaks out in the middle of the stage. The anger at his father for abandoning the family and the pain over his mother's death overwhelm him and he throws himself into Berlin's nightlife alone. When he meets the young, pretty Berliner Sabine (Aylin Tezel) and she shows him places far away from the party and tourist hotspots, he seems to find support with her.

The subject of the film is not the historical background but rather the psychological makeup of PRINCIP at the age of seventeen.

Josef Brandlmeier is a true Munich original. He is a beer delivery man, a stately figure, not so young anymore and often a little grumpy. He is not married, but he harbors a secret love for the widow Therese Enzinger, who reciprocates his feelings.
