The Honor Among Thieves

A 17th-century folk tale about four thieves trying to survive in a corrupt world during the Song Dynasty (10th-13th century) is the unusual source material for this blinding debut. The timeless sources that director Ma Lanhua mines also comprise French comedy, Chinese opera and contemporary (performance) art. Ma also utilises cinema's history, particularly the early, silent era with title cards, colours reminiscent of hand-coloured films and special effects from the arsenal of film pioneer Georges Meliès.

Rebento

What seemed to be a young couple's trivial uneasiness is redefined as a result of important news: Jéssica is pregnant and reveals it to Zói. While she seeks warmth and dialogue, he turns to a reflective state of mind further enhanced by the uncertainties of job hunting. Nonetheless, the women around him become decisive in the task of making him see the root cause of the problem: the cycle of paternal absence that he himself went through in the past but now is in a position to change.

Inferru

Mine of Inferru (Hell in the Sardinian language), Sardinia. Second half of the twentieth century. Sick and weary, an elderly miner gets buried by a landslide while mining a gallery. Suspended within a time-void between life and approaching death, the man describes the world of Inferru through an imaginative existential monologue, blending past, present, and sombre forebodings regarding the future. This film only employs archive footage in its depiction of a mesmerising trip across the final desperate, crazed and yet highly lucid thoughts of its protagonist, who tries to put a permanent end to his reckoning with society and his own conscience.
