Der schöne Hans

France, 1940. Wehrmacht soldiers are settled at the French border. Uneventful days pass by and the soldiers are getting increasingly relaxed on their duty. Except of Hans, the rookie of the group who takes his duty very seriously. He left his comfortable home with noble but naive beliefs about the army and now has to deal with a different reality. Hans' only friend is Peter, a simple but nice butcher’s son. One evening, a lot of stolen alcohol and women’s clothes brings some distraction to the soldiers. They dress up as women and organize a show.

Hallelujah

“Hallelujah” is a queer/circus concept about religion and the importance of choosing kindness regardless of our differences or beliefs. Religion is a tough subject for many in the LGBTQ community, and this piece is a reflection of the struggle and rejection we often feel. It tells the story of an individual troubled by the hate in the world and his partner who is fighting to lift him up, to remind him he is beautiful exactly how he is. My message is that religion should inspire more kindness and open arms, even towards those you may not understand.

Madama Butterfly 蝶々夫人 in Japanese and English Aratani Theatre

So what if... what if a brash American naval officer and a young Japanese girl met and fell in love? How would they communicate? (Certainly not in Italian!) In POP’s most ambitious production to date, Artistic Director Josh Shaw’s long-time dream of a bilingual Madama Butterfly comes to life at The Aratani Theatre in Little Tokyo. With a new libretto by Josh Shaw and Eiki Isomura, all Japanese roles will be sung in Japanese and all American roles will be sung in English. This is a co-production with Opera in the Heights (Houston). This production is sponsored in part by an Innovations Grant from Opera America.
