Welcome to Africville

Welcome to Africville gives voice to what may have been marginalized members of an Afro-Canadian community in 1969. It's intention is to be a catalyst to thought and reflection about the lives and struggles of people from that community whose stories still go untold. It is the fictional account of a family. We listen to the stories of three generations of women and their friend Julius on the day their community is to be destroyed by the municipal government of Halifax. This story is a portrait of four individuals coping with universal uncertainties and insecurities.

The Ultimate Pranx Case

In October 2010, three American friends decided to play a prank on a girl and to share that via a live stream on their website, pranxxxter.com. But the prank got completely out of hand, with these confrontational recordings as evidence. The plan was as follows: one of them would have a so-called romantic dinner with a girl in a villa filled with cameras. Strange twists in the plot were planned in advance for the evening, such as snacks of dog food. The lady would be tormented to the utmost and her date would have to prevent her running away. The sidekicks checked all this through their camera system in the cellar and provided a commentary on the evening. These virtually undamaged images, partly shot with a hand-held camera and intercepted by the police as evidence, show virtually in real time how an apparently innocent joke can get completely out of hand. Don’t try this at home, kids.

SPINELESS

In "SPINELESS", artist Marissa Sean Cruz embodies an ogre-girl character who gets a bone lodged in her throat and is unsure if she has died from asphyxiation. Set in a digitally-rendered room , this abstracted narrative is told through a series of vignettes that look to greed, hope, and self-fulfilment in contemporary times. The ogre is caught in the chokehold of some kind of technological hell that is as absurd and alienating as the real online/offline culture it references. This purgatory world formed from a digital economy, nihilism and pressingly, under the state of climate crisis.
