The subway, which spreads like a spider web under the heart of a huge city, is a blue mirror that projects our appearance. The concrete of the city, which grows bigger day by day, is today's baobab tree and the mannequin flowing underneath it. There are no people under the modern appearance of the city that is more splendid today due to the absence of tomorrow. The end of the city, where only symbols remain, is therefore empty.

The story of a man and a woman who dance through walls and partitions in a city made of cells, boxes, rooms, and recesses that are explored from the inside, layer after layer. It is the story of a vision, which at times is unique and coherent, and other times gears down, leaving one eye after another in every room of the city. Still, beyond the explosive transformation of bodies, identities, forms, places, and glances, the sinuous choreography of the human couple remains in the spectator’s mind, one and primeval.

The generating material for Rhythm 94 is a sequence of photographs taken by the cinematographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge. The sequence is transposed into a single movement across the screen. The basic pattern arising out of the abstract nature of the photo animation is available for repetition at various speeds and in various spatial relationships.

This film was made in 1992 during my 2nd year of my BFA, at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW. Sydney, Australia.

The central character is a 7 year old girl called Sachiko. She has just lost her immediate family in the firebombing of Tokyo and takes the train to her uncle’s family in Kumagaya in Saitama Prefecture. She is not out of danger yet, for the train gets shot at by a plane along the journey. Her uncle meets her at the station and he and his whole family welcome her with open arms. With her cousins, Sachiko explores the beauty of the natural landscape around Kumagaya. Sadly, these beautiful days of late summer are not to last. The final movement of the film depicts the final air raid of the war. The city descends into fear and chaos and Sachiko gets separated from her family with tragic results.

On the Run is a computer animated cartoon that uses automated computer characters: no behaviour was hand animated. The work explores how techniques from robotics can be be applied to computer animation. The characters were animated automatically, using physics-based simulation and task-level control. On the Run appeared in the SIGGRAPH'91 Electronic Theater and won first prize in the Research Category at Imagina '92.
