The Queen of the Swallows

Families do not always get along so harmoniously, nor do brothers always see eye-to-eye. As told in an old Korean Fairytale, two brothers – Nolbu and Hungbu – live in the same village and must divide up the inheritance left to them by their father. Yet Nolbu, the elder brother, is greedy and arrogant. He seizes his father’s house, along with the good folks who live there and even persecutes Hungbu and his family. In this endeavour, Nolbu is assisted by his greedy wife and a few unscrupulous individuals. Yet, the kind and virtuous Hungbu constructs a hut for him and his family in some nearby woods… and up on the rooftop of this hovel, a swallow has built his nest...

A Catalog of Anticipations

A woman drifts back to childhood memories of rural Texas where her discovery of the jawbone of a horse in a field leads to a fascination with, in her own words, "dead things." Her natural history collection of insects and bones takes on a supernatural quality when she finds the corpse of a strange creature that she believes must be a faery. Using still photographs, found objects and unsettling creations that briefly come to life via stop-motion animation (which evokes the work of the Brothers Quay and gives them an even more unreal presence), filmmaker David Lowery tells a phantasmagorical story, part fantastical mystery and part nightmare, as a primal memory. A CATALOG OF ANTICIPATIONS weaves imagination and experience into a haunting tale recalled in snapshots of recollection, a dark fantasy with a tactile texture that grounds it in the physical world and narration that frames it as a coming-of-age moment. - Sean Axmaker

Tide Table

The film sees a businessman (the Soho Eckstein figure from Kentridge's earlier films) standing on a hotel balcony watching the waves. Time passes, as the sea rolls back andforth in endless repetitions. We as viewers observed from his point of view. Then the scene shifts to a large drawing of a man, still in his business suit but now alternately sleeping and reading a newspaper at the water's edge in a deck chair. The drawing is folded into a series of images that provide a visual mediation on time's passage, on industry, on ildeness. Kentridge's work is often densely allusive, and here the film alludes to the Old Testament. The artist expressedly indicates that biblical accounts has informed his thinking. It is what he refers to as being 'over-determined' in that the motif arises from several distinct sets of meaning.
