Manual Cinema's Christmas Carol

An avowed holiday skeptic, Aunt Trudy has been recruited to channel her late husband Joe’s famous Christmas cheer. From the isolation of her Chicago apartment, she reconstructs his annual Christmas Carol puppet show – over a Zoom call while the family celebrates Christmas Eve under lockdown. But as Trudy becomes more absorbed in her own version of the story, the puppets take on a life of their own, and the family’s call transforms into a stunning cinematic adaptation of Dickens’s classic ghost story.

Elephant Elephant Elephant!

Elephant, Elephant, Elephant! an immersive animation experience, hand drawn into a 360o environment, it plays with our anthropomorphism of elephants, initially delighting the audience with the clumsy elefunks performing incongruous circus tricks to the pompous music of the Thai Elephant Orchestra; they then transform back into ‘real’ elephants, whose stereotypical actions taken from zoo strangely appear like they are dancing and greeting each other. The illusion broken, the suspension of disbelief is exposed it signals the beginning of the elephant’s poetic escape leaving us alone in the dark.

Shcha, 5 sec - 4

"Shcha, 5 sec" appeared as a joke exactly a year ago in 2019 in the Animation Club of the "Big Cartoon Festival". Animation director Yevgeny Fadeev joked, and curator Nadezhda Svirskaya took up the organization: in social networks, the reception of 5-second cartoons was announced, which anyone could send, regardless of their professional level. The initiators expected that the entire program would consist of a couple of minutes, because the open call lasted only a week, but almost 150 films were sent, including from abroad.

Mother Figure

Drawing from a close friend’s childhood memories and his struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Mother Figure is centred on a man and his toxic relationship with his mother growing up. The animation begins with the protagonist whipping out his radio from childhood. As he presses the play button on the radio, mellow music starts to fill the room. A familiar whirring sound starts to envelope the protagonist as well, whisking him back in time. As childhood memories begin to flood back, recollections of Mother start to creep up on the protagonist as well. An overbearing Mother dictates his living space to nothing beyond a red box, while the earnest protagonist yearns for nothing but Mother’s love. Tragedy strikes when the protagonist goes out of bounds and messes with Mother’s lipstick one day…

Polaridi: The Room

Soba is a music video for the Polaridi band, a melancholy pop ballad about loneliness and transience of time, the thoughts we all harbour when we’re alone in the dark. On time, darkness, thoughts and emotions inspired by Višeslav Šošić’s text, Laura Martinović spontaneously creates and combines elements of a tree, person, dream, excitement, inner flame, sorrow, loneliness, claustrophobia, isolation, inspiration, alienation, search, creation, individual, community, city.

Away: Travel the Vote

In the 2016 election, over 318,000 absentee ballots were rejected. Luggage brand Away decided to combat this unfortunate reality with a campaign called “Travel the Vote”—which encouraged people to go directly to their registered places of voting to cast their ballots in person. This film—directed by Hornet’s own Natalie Labarre and created by Hornet’s 2D team over a tight 3-week turnaround—is a stylish :60-second spot that's all about traveling in the name of democracy.
