The Animated Haggadah

This telling of the Passover story explains the Jewish people's liberation from slavery in claymation. The film, narrated by a 12-year-old named Danny, begins at a modern-day family Seder complete with parents, grandparents, and siblings. The family is quickly transported to ancient Egypt, where the evil Pharaoh, enthroned amidst a very sandy desert, performs wicked deeds in colorful ways. They witness reenactments of the Burning Bush, the Ten Plagues and other events, along with depictions of ancient Egypt itself, a land of swaying pyramids and wily men.

Johannesburg, 2nd Greatest City After Paris

William Kentridge’s ironic tribute to his hometown, animated on the basis of 25 drawings, is the first film of his “Drawing for Protection” cycle, in which he unfolds the triangle between Johannesburg building tycoon Soho Eckstein, his wife, and the dreamer Felix Teitelbaum. In this film he introduces the central characters of his meta-narrative which, located in a South Africa of the last days of a crumbling Apartheid, becomes an allegorical reflection on socio-political power relations.

The Acorns and the Wildcat

The Acorns and the Wildcat is a unique short film in picture-book format from the creator of Night on the Galactic Railroad and Gauche the Cellist. Unusually for an anime, a narrator reads Kenji's story aloud while the action is played out on the screen by a succession of warm and evocative illustrations brought to life by subtle touches of animation. If the film feels somehow familiar yet you can't put your finger on the reason why, it's probably the sumptuously minimalist animation by Yasuhiro Nagura, who was the animation director of Mamoru Oshii's artsy 1986 feature Angel's Egg. That, and Kenji's wildcat is said to have been the inspiration for Miyazaki's Panda/Totoro creature. The idea of reading Kenji's story aloud instead of playing it out as a drama is quite refreshing, and Kenji's magical language and narrative style are entirely sufficient to sustain interest. Combined with the spacey music and breathtaking art, the result is a pleasantly unassuming little gem of a film.

The Magic Bells

A good tale about the inhabitants of a magical city who were shamelessly robbed by the villain Miraclus. He stole their smiles - sly, playful, tender, affectionate - and melted them into golden bells! The Miracle dungeon was filled with a quiet, clear ringing sound, fresh and transparent, like a forest spring. He enjoyed this music, but the people in the city looked at each other with sad eyes and thought that joy had left them forever. But one day a cheerful company came to this city - a kind wizard, a girl Katya, a boy Vasya and a cartoon cat that came to life - and helped the residents return their smiles.
