Bassin d'attraction

The film questions the sacred relationship to objects and the different statuses conferred on them throughout their lives. Precious objects - votive offerings from the National Etruscan Museum in Villa Giulia - ornaments from churches or Roman sculptures, as well as contemporary detritus come together and evolve together in a kind of amniotic fluid. Usually inert forms have evolved into autonomous creatures: these composite beings interact, gesticulate, attract each other, react. By adopting the point of view of objects, by infusing them with a dose of desire, by giving them a semblance of soul, the artist reconsiders the border between the living and the non-living.

What does it mean to make an animated film accessible to people with impaired vision? Can audio description convey what’s happening on the screen and what is, especially in animated film, often entirely a product of the imagination? Anne Isensee (Golden Dove for “Megatrick” in 2017) tackles these complex questions with a light touch, humour and verbal wit. She pulls off the feat of producing a concentrated cinematic investigation into the multi-layered quality of (all) perception.

The Interrogation

Set several decades in the future, The Interrogation is a cat-and-mouse game between a corporate media executive performing a “loyalty test” and a savvy news director harboring a potentially game-changing secret. The Interrogation explores a mind-bending and often-psychedelic world where an all-powerful media company sets all the rules and demands religious-like devotion from its employees. In just 6 minutes, this short animation takes the audience on an unexpected ride full of twists and turns. Based on the award-winning The Cloaked Realm Universe created by Peter Issac Alexander and Marisa L. Cohen, The Interrogation features hand-drawn animation, an original score by John Baxter, and sound design by Dara Crawford.

Through the Eye of a Needle

A personal project with a communal impact, this film aims at transforming individual memories of suffering into a collective memory. It portrays both satirical and realistic scenes from public spaces in Gaza City. The project addresses a range of social issues that have persisted and recurred over the past 15 years, becoming an inseparable part of the city’s fabric and the lives of its residents. It also explores the conceptual landscape of Gaza through the digitization and 3D modeling of these spaces – structures that continue to expand as the blockade endures. This is an attempt to envision how the current natural space might appear.
