1813 - Gott mit uns

In October 1813, the largest battle to date took place near Leipzig: the decisive battle of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleonic foreign rule—the Battle of the Nations. Of the approximately 600,000 soldiers from over a dozen peoples and nations who fought in the battle, around 92,000 were killed or wounded. Many more victims among the civilian population of Leipzig were claimed by a typhus epidemic following the battle. The fully animated film by Leipzig-born animator Schwarwel is about these victims, about war, about its destruction and suffering, and we follow the paths of Napoleon, his adversaries, officers and soldiers, a market vendor, a surgeon, a pastor, a cemetery doctor, and a war widow through the turmoil of October 18, 1813, the day that finally decided the battle.

Mathuật – MMRBX

“Mathuật” is a combination of the artist’s name, Maithu, and the Vietnamese word for magic, ma thuật, while MMRBX is an acronym for the working term memory box. The work metaphorically associates the Vietnamese ritual of caring for the dead with an allegorical and virtual memory box that stores mnemonic moving images. Heavily contextualized within Southeast and East Asian mythology, where communication with the dead is an integral part of everyday life, Mathuật – MMRBX aims to excavate the wounded past of survivor diasporas (Việt Kiều) that remains invisible to most communities. The artist believes that in a world suffering from postcolonial amnesia, we resist by remembering, as it is impossible for the ghosts and spirits of historical traumas to rest in peace. Bùi aims to establish an archive of personal memories and transgenerational traumas that allows the Vietnamese diaspora to formalize a story of their own.

The fire spirit uses the rainman's sleep to steal his magic rod and his magic water. He dries up all the water and causes great hardship for people and animals. When the fire spirit tampers with the count's well, he is overpowered and imprisoned. For his release, he promises the Count the bottle of magic water. Two children who are looking for water overhear the conversation. They learn that the rainman can only be awakened with the magic rod and the magic water. Andreas uses a trick to get hold of the water. Lies receives the rod in exchange from the vain wife of the fire spirit. The children search for the rainman. The fire spirit puts them in danger several times and tries to stop them from getting any further. Nevertheless, they find the rainman's cave and awaken him. Now the trouble is over, the fire spirit is defeated. It rains again.

What it means to fear support, accepting it with the risk of vulnerability and the ability to be empathic towards others even if they lack the tools to help escape out of your own prison. „Adrift“ distills those feelings while simultaneously dealing with the immensely frustrating reality of large sentient animals held in captivity for our own amusement. Dive in but don’t forget to come back up to inhale the air.

GALAXY

The narrator in the moving image work "GALAXY" is technology itself. "GALAXY" tells the story of the brief encounter of the two characters Touch and Long Swipe. The story is generated by an algorithm and offers an interpretation of an encounter of love and disappointment. Small deviations in the language and the narrative logic reveal our social imprint of how stories are expected to be told and how technology is programmed to follow these perceptions. The mise-en-scéne is a computer-generated galaxy of objects and images reminiscent of the organic, but dismembered and fragmented, reflecting on the possibility of creating new worlds and stories in digital space by following a subjective system of ordering.
