The Tornado Outside

A young woman named Anna lives in a stable, perfect house, anchored in space, locked safely away from the chaotic Tornado that rages outside. Only when her house keys are blown away, is she forced to confront the chaos that she works so hard to avoid. As she navigates her way through the tornado to retrieve her keys, she encounters a variety of people, living their normal lives, embracing the chaos. Anna's perspective on life is challenged as she must decide whether to join the unpredictable world of the tornado, or go back to the safety of her tethered house.

From the music of Argentine composer Gabriel Chwojnik, Turkish-Belgian filmmakers Imge Özbilge and Sine Özbilge pay an homages to the mother of experimental and avant-garde film director and artist, Maya Deren. This short film is part of the 2x25 Project of Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Awards. The project commissioned 25 composers to compose a short piece of music, after which 25 filmmakers made short films that are the ultimate symbioses of music and cinematography, fitting completely within the DNA of the festival. The result: 25 exceptional films where the music inspired the form, narrative and texture.

From One Painting... to Another

The film begins with a part of the title disappearing through a cut in its center, cutting through the middle and producing a movement from right to left, revealing a room occupied by a child and her black maid. This is followed by an uninterrupted series of animated images, a kind of fleeting moment or painting that continually transforms, until it becomes a copy of Edouard Manet’s Olympia (1863). The second part begins with the title’s next part, which disappears just like the first one, setting in motion a reverse movement, from left to right, where images related to the first part, out of focus or from other points of view, arrive, ending with the reproduction of Félix Vallotton’s La Blanche et la Noire (1913).
