Don Pelayo

An epic tale about the legend of the historical figure Don Pelayo. Set to a rock rhythm, it tells and illustrates how Asturian rebels led by Don Pelayo faced an army in the mountains of Covadonga (722 AD). In the moments before the battle, Don Pelayo recalls how, in his youth, a hermit pleaded for the life of a thief who was about to be executed for stealing. Thanks to Don Pelayo's forgiveness and for keeping the cave of Covadonga pure, the hermit prophesied that, in the future, this place would be his refuge and the Virgin of Covadonga his protector.

Some Protection

Made as one of a four part series exploring different aspects of women and the law, on which all the women animators involved researched and worked as a group, before then making individual films, each quite different in content, tone and style. Based on the real life experiences of Josie O Dwyer, the film uses her voice as commentary, taken from hours of taped conversation with the filmmaker. Different styles of drawing convey her emotions and the devastating effects detention and imprisonment have on young girls put away 'for their own protection'.

The Immortality of the Crab

"The Immortality of the crab" is an experimental animated short film shot on super 8 film, made with in-camera editing and no post production. In this movie, the synaesthetic research between sound and image is accomplished by connecting the animations, made on 1125 cardboard frames, with an original soundtrack produced using only sounds sampled by handling pieces of cardboard. The title refers to the time spent between the birth of the embryonal idea and the production of the short. "The Immortality of the crab" is a south american expression, almost no longer used, which indicates the act of daydreaming. This film symbolizes the director's release from the spectre of procrastination, a condition he sistematically faced when daydreaming about possible ways to give shape to his idea.

Diffrerent

'Diffrerent' is an animation that explores neurodiversity learning disabilities such as dyslexia. The film follows an ant’s journey, as it breaks from its chain-like system, as a metaphor for those who are unable to fit in. There’s always been this feeling of without Dyslexia who would I be? As it’s such a large part of me as a person and in everyday life. This film explores this area of my life by looking back at a childhood hobby, the collection of insects, and the problems I experienced when I was younger and still as an adult today. Some days I can wake up and not be able to remember my full address and other days I can. However the previous hobby and study of insects always remained. I’ve always felt out of place, out of the normal system, and in time while having this feeling I’ve found other ways of coping. The film aims to be more of an understanding of the past and present that can give back a positive attitude to dyslexia within society.
