All for Claire

Lee is a young man determined to win the heart of Claire, a young woman determined to make life difficult for him. Dancing playfully on her crutches, Claire frustrates Lee’s romantic advances, transporting him away to daunting environments where he’ll need to think on his feet if he’s to win her affections. Director Simon McKeown worked with actor Lee Soar and choreographer Claire Cunningham to create this colourful motion-capture animation which was first broadcast on BBC Big Screens across Britain in 2010. Mckeown explores themes of power, control and rejection in the work and originally created two versions with different endings for festival audiences to choose from – ‘win’ or ‘lose’?

Stille Nacht III: Tales from Vienna Woods

Near an extraordinary chair with many legs, a hand is visible gripping an edge. The hand is weathered, the fingers cracked and scarred. The end of a rifle appears and a shot fires. The bullet is visible whirling through space; it caroms and then goes through a pine cone. A long spoon emerges from a drawer in the chair and stretches toward the hand. The bullet is on the spoon. Later, the hand holds the bullet between two fingers; another shot is fired.

Two Best Girl Friends

A couple of women meet at a café, where one talks incessantly about the men in her life in a heavy Bavarian dialect, while her so-called best friend sits silently, surrounded by smoke. The conversation is superficial and stilted, highlighted by the exaggerated and caricatured animation style. Only when the talkative woman leaves to meet her new boyfriend does the silent one speak, ordering a beer. The scene critiques the societal expectation that women should focus their conversations solely on men, often ignoring the discomfort of others.

Cambia tutto

Cambia Tutto is comprised of over 2500 images that, when brought together in sequence, take the viewer through the small Italian village of Cavaso del Tomba — a place that has changed from a cultural epicentre of its rural region to a sleepy town surrounded by industrial sites. Each frame of the film is a carefully photographed or painted image of a specific aspect of the area and the score is interwoven with local field recordings. All these details come together to celebrate this small overlooked village and show how immensely beautiful those unnoticed things and forgotten places are if you pay attention.
