Backyard Barbeque

In 1993 I had a weird dream one night, a few weeks later it had morphed into the storyboard for this film, which features my friend Scot Campbell. Scot is a great painter and art car enthusiast. He's also known as Extremo the Clown. We shot most of the live action in one day in 16mm. The stop motion animation was added in the weeks following. At the time I was really into the films of Alex Winter and Tom Stern, so some of the flavor of this short might come from that influence. Later that year I had the opportunity to help out briefly with the title sequence to their film "Freaked".

Diving into the NFB’s vast archive, she parses the complicated cinematic representation of the Inuit, harvesting fleeting truths and fortuitous accidents from a range of sources—newsreels, propaganda, ethnographic docs, and work by Indigenous filmmakers. Embedding historic footage into original animation, she conjures up a vision of hope and beautiful possibility.
