Spring and Winter

Feinstein's "Spring and Winter" explores themes present throughout her oeuvre. The narrative is derived from Giambattista Basile's "Sun, Moon, and Talia" (1634), which is considered the original version of the "Sleeping Beauty" story. Fairy tales, kitsch, and the intricacies of femininity commingle as Feinstein performs as a paper doll, maiden, and crone. The spaces between the dichotomies of fiction and reality, young and old, sexual and pure are disclosed within the scope of feminine identity within this film.

A Day in the Life of Willie Faust, or Death on the Installment Plan

Jamaa Fanaka’s first project plays off the Blaxploitation’s genre conventions, an adaption of Goethe’s “Faust” presented with a non-synchronous soundtrack and superimposed over a remake of Super Fly (1972). Often out of focus with an overactive camera, the film immediately exudes nervous energy, but unlike Priest’s elegant cocaine consumption in Super Fly, Willie’s arm gushes blood as he injects heroin. A morality tale in two reels. —Jan-Christopher Horak

My Silence, My Grave

In a claustrophobic apartment building, an acquiescent apartment manager, Julia, is tasked with cleaning out a unit following a series of gruesome rituals. A cursed encounter amid the gore finds her on the run from a cannibalistic killer, all while her grasp on reality disintegrates. On the surface, My Silence, My Grave is simple horror story about a woman trapped between losing her humanity and her life. But under the surface, where most of society's pervasive ills lie, it's a story about one woman's fight against a sordid system that pits marginalized peoples against each other. Through physical horror and psychological unease, Julia realizes that her own inaction has only served to hurt other minorities and to preserve the power of their oppressors.

Encore

The audience is consensually prompted to gaze into the small, condensed universe of someone experiencing a fascinatingly destructive egomania. Here, they recognize behavior once thought to be beyond eccentric, yet today somehow normalized - perhaps sprouting from a modern culture of self-centered ideology? We witness in this character the downfall of self-idolatry; the frequent cause and occasional side effect of pathological narcissism; self-hatred. The struggle between loving oneself more than anything, while simultaneously desiring perfection, threatens to upend the film's eerie dreamworld. However, a brief brush with self-awareness only serves to solidify the character's self-obsession. An existential crisis half-realized - drowned in the shallow waters of Narcissus' well.
