The Kovacs Mystique

This televised biography special, hosted by Martin Short, examines the innovative work of comedian Ernie Kovacs, featuring a series of clips of his shows and performances. Short explains that Kovacs' work was "simple and innocent" on the surface, but featured a "grim" darker side that pleased his audience, including a memorable sketch in which his opera critic character used a shotgun to express his annoyance with a soprano's performance. He did most of his own writing and created a series of unique characters of various nationalities and professions, including a Prussian DJ and a bumbling magician. He played upon his experience as a second-generation immigrant, born to Hungarian parents, and his most famous characters included Miklos Molnar, a Hungarian cooking show host, and Leena, Queen of the Jungle. A pair of gag glasses helped Kovacs to create Percy Dovetails, a lisping poetry enthusiast of dubious talent.

Russian Avant-Garde: A Romance with the Revolution

The dramatic story of three great Russian avant-garde painters from the beginning of the last century – Kazimir Malevich, Pavel Filonov and Vladimir Tatlin – and their supporter, Nikolai Punin, the first post-revolution Commissar of the Hermitage and Russian Museums. They dedicated their lives to belief in the revolution and its connection to avant-garde art, but the communist regime betrayed them. The history depicted on the painted canvases reflects the tumultuous period of the 1920s and 30s in the Soviet Union, in Leningrad and in artistic circles of the time. Only with perestroika have the avant-garde paintings, stored in museum archives, again seen the light of day.

Unwanted Soldiers

This documentary tells the personal story of filmmaker Jari Osborne's father, a Chinese-Canadian veteran. She describes her father's involvement in World War II and uncovers a legacy of discrimination and racism against British Columbia's Chinese-Canadian community. Sworn to secrecy for decades, Osborne's father and his war buddies now vividly recall their top-secret missions behind enemy lines in Southeast Asia. Theirs is a tale of young men proudly fighting for a country that had mistreated them. This film does more than reveal an important period in Canadian history. It pays moving tribute to a father's quiet heroism.
