She alone will become queen, Sebastian thought to himself. Little did he know that his chosen one, the kind and diligent Mariana, had a lazy and envious sister, Adriana, and that the two girls, born at the same hour, were indistinguishable from one another.

The Tokugawa Treasure: Final Excavation

Between 1990 and 1993, Japan's TBS network spent ¥350 million digging into the side of Mount Akagi, searching for the legendary shogunate gold that vanished during the Meiji Restoration. This 1994 TV movie compiles the four-year excavation into a single 95-minute documentary: copywriter Shigesato Itoi as the unlikely captain, the Mizuno family's three-generation obsession, American psychics consulted in earnest, and contractor Mochizuki running heavy machinery deeper into the mountain than anyone had gone before.

Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years

Tells the story of Sadie and Bessie Delany, two African-American (they preferred "colored") sisters who both lived past the age of 100. They grew up on a North Carolina college campus, the daughters of the first African-American Episcopal bishop, who was born a slave, and a woman with an inter-racial background. With the support of each other and their family, they survived encounters with racism and sexism in their own different ways. Sadie quietly and sweetly broke barriers to become the first African-American home-ec teacher in New York City, while Bessie, with her own brand of outspokenness, became the second African-American dentist in New York City. At the ages of 103 and 101, they told their story to Amy Hill Hearth, a white New York Times reporter who published an article about them. The overwhelming response launched a bestselling book, a Broadway play, and this film.

Leben für den FC Bayern

They do not earn millions, yet they are happy nonetheless: Maria Meissner (87), Josef “Sepp” Schmid (74), and Rudi Egerer (65) have spent most of their lives working for FC Bayern. Maria still cleanses the trophies nowadays, Sepp still washes and prepares the jerseys of the players in the basement, and Rudi is still the bus driver. They are simple people who may have access to the glamorous world of the big stars, but who never wanted to adapt to the ‘modern times’ unconditionally. They have remained side characters and experience their club from a special angle: Being witnesses of the development from a people’s sport to star cult and commercialisation.

A Pleasant Terror: The Life and Ghosts of M.R. James

A biopic on the author M. R. James. If M.R. James wrote his ghost stories purely to entertain his friends, why do they seem to strike such resonances in readers? Why are they so terrifying? Clive Dunn's fifty minute documentary sets out to try to answer this question. In the words of its fictional narrator, nicely played by Dangerfield's Bill Wallis, "was there something that made [Monty James] believe that evil and malice could become palpable?"
