Sole Survivor

In 1960, the ruins of an American bomber were found in the Libyan desert, but the remains of the crew were never located. In Guerdon Trueblood's teleplay, the ghosts of a bomber crew hang around their derelict plane, awaiting the day that their bones will be recovered and given a decent burial. The sole survivor, navigator Russell Hamner, has in the intervening 25 years become a General. He joins an investigation team that has come across the wreckage, while the ghosts, headed by Major Devlin, plot to expose Hamner as a coward who deserted his post and left his crew mates to die.

Andy's Funhouse

This special was taped in 1977 but did not air until August 1979, on ABC. It featured most of Andy's famous gags, including Foreign Man/Latka and his Elvis Presley impersonation, as well as a host of unique segments (including a special appearance by children's television character Howdy Doody and the "Has-been Corner"). There also is a segment that included fake television screen static as part of the gag, which ABC executives were not comfortable with, fearing that viewers would mistake the static for broadcast problems and would change the channel—which was the comic element Kaufman wanted to present. Andy's Funhouse was written by Kaufman, Zmuda, and Mel Sherer, with music by Kaufman.

Shirley MacLaine: Gypsy in My Soul

Musical Special featuring Shirley MacLaine in her tribute to chorus dancers, colloquially known as "gypsies." Produced by Cy Coleman and Fred Ebb, the special uses a self-referential show business plot in which the star rehearses for her television special about the life of a dancer. MacLaine performed a wide range of songs including "Lucy's Back in Town," during which Lucille Ball made a "surprise" appearance. The program won Outstanding Special: Comedy-Variety or Music at that year's Emmys as well as awards for writing (Ebb), music composition (Coleman), and choreography (Tony Charmoli).

The Old World Landowners

The old couple, Afanasy Ivanovich Tovstogub and his wife Pulcheria Ivanovna, live in seclusion in one of the remote villages known as "starosvitsky" in Little Russia. Their life is so peaceful that to a guest who happens to visit their low, green-roofed manor house, the passions and turmoil of the outside world seem to have no existence. The small rooms of the house are filled with all sorts of trinkets, the doors are singing in different keys, and the storerooms are filled with supplies, which are constantly being prepared by the servants under the supervision of Pulcheria Ivanovna. Despite the fact that the household is being robbed by the steward and the servants, the blessed land produces so much that Afanasy Ivanovich and Pulcheria Ivanovna do not notice the thefts at all.
