1919 - Fiume, Città di Vita

A country torn apart by the First World War. A people mourning over 650,000 fallen in the trenches. Politicians humiliated at the Versailles peace table. A poet-soldier who draws crowds to every rally. A city that becomes an emblem of irredentist and nationalist claims. It was in this Italy that the Fiume enterprise began on 12 September 1919: the adventure of Grabiele d'Annunzio and a handful of legionnaires who set out from Ronchi in Friuli, against the will of the established power, to occupy the Adriatic city and annex it to Italy, establish the Regency of Carnaro, and found a 'myth' destined to influence Italian and international culture and politics, aesthetics and vocabulary, well beyond the Twenty Years of Fascism.

When America Invaded Russia

In 1918, roughly 5,000 American soldiers were sent to fight the Soviet Union’s Red Army in Archangel, Russia. And there they remained—engaged in brutal combat with Bolshevik revolutionaries in sixty below zero temperatures—months after the November 11 armistice had officially ended the Great War. Throughout the punishing fall and winter, U.S. troops felt misled by their government, frustrated by their commanders, and outnumbered by their enemy. By July of 1919, more than 200 soldiers had died from battles, accidents, and the Spanish flu—all while fighting a war that was already over. Based on the newly-released book The Polar Bear Expedition by historian James Carl Nelson, 'When America Invaded Russia,' tells the often forgotten story of our country’s year-long battle with Russia, and pays tribute to the brave soldiers who lost their lives as a result.

The SS: A Barbaric State

Nuremberg is where Nazi congresses were held. In the city where Hitler gathered huge crowds of fanatics, the court hosted in 1945 the greatest trial in History. The Allied victors judged those responsible for the Third Reich. Among the defendants are the Führer's closest surviving accomplices. But not only them: defendant number 27 is not even a man. It is an entire organization: the SS were a state within the state – which ruled all the police – with its own army, within the Nazi regime.
