Safety First

Ah Quan makes a living as a laborer, earning money through physical work. In his spare time, he enjoys gambling, with mixed results—sometimes winning, but mostly losing. As a result, aside from making ends meet, his savings are pitifully small. It wasn't until his elderly father, Ah Dong (played by Peng Yi), began frequently going in and out of the hospital that most of his income had to be spent on his father's medical expenses, prompting him to gradually quit gambling. However, watching his father suffer from illness and dealing with the pressure from his wife, Qiu Rong (played by Huang Jiefei), Ah Quan decided to take a gamble once more, hoping for a turnaround. Unfortunately, on the same day, his father's life came to an end, leaving Ah Quan torn between using his father's funeral savings and his hopes of hitting the jackpot.

Guo Mie

A karaoke-addicted elderly woman (Chen Shu-Fang) lives her life by the Taiwanese saying, “Guo Mie,” which translates to “as long as you devote your life to the creation of one thing, and do whatever you could, everything will turn out.” But her philosophy is seriously put into question as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her estranged husband. She attends the funeral only to encounter his younger lover and then finds out that her children might have kept in touch with her late husband secretly behind her back. Director Joseph Chen-Chieh Hsu said that the story is based on his grandmother, who was forced to raise eight kids by herself after her husband ran away. The student short film was shot in his home country of Taiwan. Selected as a 2017 Student Academy Awards Finalist, the short also appeared in the 2018 Asian American International Film Festival. It’s the first time that lead actress Shu-Fang has sung in a film in over 40 years.

The Roar

The film peers through the conditions of different social groups and their accusation, compromization, and pondering over their lives from the perspective of a taxi driver Huang and presents different issues in his daily family life; describing the disturbance from his wife’s point of view about the money and the marriage and all the absurd but real situation like how she turned to friend and god when facing difficulties; depicting his daughter’s troubles from the school, her boyfriend, her pregnancy and how she dealt with them in a seemingly mature but actually naive way. The driver, his wife, and his daughter held their own secrets until he came across a robbery, smashing the peaceful illusion of his family and tempting the improper thought inside him.
