Illusions

This is a story about love—the kind we chase, the kind we settle for, and the kind that sneaks up on us when we’re not paying attention. It’s about permanence, or the lack of it, and the terrifying realisation that maybe nothing in life—no feeling, no relationship—ever truly stays the same. Alisa Melikova’s debut film Illusions (2025) is a rich tapestry of emotions, following two couples whose lives have been entwined for 50 years. It poses the question: Is love real, or just a story we tell ourselves? And in the end, does it even matter?

Demon Twink

Dante is a lonely, middle-aged, gay man in 1991. He came out later in life, so he missed out on the experience of being young and queer, along with all the love and lust that comes with it. When he finally works up the courage to make up for lost time, he is rejected and condemned. At his most desperate, Dante hears laughter echoing within a gay nightclub gloryhole. As he nears the fluid-drenched stall door, he quickly finds himself transported to the lair of a demon, who is ready to offer him eternal youth and beauty. Although Dante seeks more than just sex, he nervously accepts this unrefusable offer. It doesn’t take long for the demon to reveal the strings attached–to keep his new body, he must kill his hookups every full moon, “when the gays are their most feral.” It turns out Dante is pretty good at being a killer, that is until he falls in love with one of his victims.

Manakin

Manakin is an experimental short that follows the story of a single woman living in a desolate house accompanied by a life-like stuffed doll. A creation of her own design, the manakin projects videos of single men reciting words of lust, absurd confessions and the desire for human connection. While these audio-visual projections keep her company in her isolation, our subject begins to weave her own web crafted by the same material as the doll, growing as an entity outside this house. Directed by Kasey Oldford, Manakin uses found audio prompts from the dating app Hinge, spliced and put back together to create a nerve wracking video love poem that touches on the obscene and lonely reality of the modern quest for love.

My Love

Set in the vibrant, transitional period of 1990s Bishkek, Maksat, a young street-smart boxer with a tender heart, and Aisulu, a kind and principled university student from a respectable family. Despite coming from vastly different worlds — Maksat being an orphan and Aisulu having a privileged upbringing — the two fall in love. Their romance unfolds through everyday moments: strolls in the park, house parties, and small but meaningful gestures, such as gifting chewing gum. Their bond grows stronger in the face of social pressure and parental disapproval, especially as Aisulu is being pushed towards marriage with Tilek, a deceptive, self-serving man who doesn't love Aisulu. As the film merges the past and present, we follow the couple into old age, witnessing a love that endures all obstacles and hardships that come their way.
