Pauline Schwebe is a police officer and single. She is touched when she discovers Leo Golombeck's handwritten wish list at a traffic light. In it, the seven-year-old invites a lonely soul to a Christmas party with his family. In return, he wouldn't mind if the lonely soul brought a few presents. Pauline visits Leo, who lives in modest circumstances with his sister Lotte and his dad Daniel. As Pauline's parents are constantly nagging her that she is still single, she quickly invites Daniel and his children to the family Christmas party and introduces him as her new boyfriend.

A notoriously overtired master baker Oliver Maibach has been working late at night in the family bakery to provide fresh bread and rolls together with his mother Elisabeth. One day, when he meets the attractive cellist Greta, the widowed father begins to doubt whether his future lies in this never-changing daily grind. Translator Lena Feldhusen travels to Copenhagen to supposedly research the Danish writer Karen Blixen. Anna and Ida can sing great together and Hum shares the contact with his friends who play in a band. A timid and touching love story develops between Hum and Anna. Both are looking forward to the first performance of the band, in which Anna now sings. But shortly before the performance, Hum is to be deported. Neither his love for Anna and music nor his imagination can save him from the everyday life of a refugee.

He discovers soon after his arrival that he is a misfit in this settlement of old conservative Islamic men,some women and children. The only ray of hope for him is Amira a young married woman who waits in frustration for her absentee husband - a Mujahideen. Temur watches sorrowfully as the individual village stories unfold at the same as he tries to help the community out in any way he can. In this way he comes closer to Amira and Taib, her young brother-in-law. In a dead end situation the lovers decide to leave the settlement and travel to a place that would hold out with their dreams. While Liane took care of the children and the household, architect Ben jetted around the world building luxury hotels. In reality, Ben is stuck on a project in Morocco and can't pick up his wife at the airport in Lisbon. He has sent his friend, the Portuguese João, as a replacement. He takes his role very seriously and Liane obviously takes a liking to the new man at her side.

It begins with a Tannhäuser performance and ends with the premiere of The Tales of Hoffmann. In between a young ingénue cast in her first big role, the Hoffmann rehearsals, the theatre director and his stage director exchanging cynicisms, a budding love affair. Gründgens at his most repulsive, trying to woo both lovers. And a hair-raising finale. Add to this some snappy dialogue and "pre-code" scenes that make you sit up and stare.

Endstation offers the American viewer tantalizing glimpses of busy, bustling mid-1930s Vienna. Otherwise, this minor yarn of an amorous streetcar conductor is strictly formula material. The film benefits from the star power of Paul Horbiger, resplendently garbed in an elaborate conductor's uniform. Also worth noting is the performance of Maria Andergest as the woebegone hatmaker whose fate is inextricably linked with hero Horbiger. Incidentally though the direction is credited with one E. W. Emo, Paul Horbiger actually called most of the shots on Endstation.
