Three friends who cannot seem to catch a break decide to make their own ways. Where do their paths lead them?

While Scotty McTavish is driving around his his big automobile, he sees a very pretty girl enter his father's railroad yards and falls in love at first sight. He borrows some blue overalls, gets by the gate-man and applies to the yard-foreman, "Slugger" Martin for a job. Scotty tells Martin his main objective is to meet the girl. The girl is Patsy Thorne, daughter of the yardmaster, and also the apple of Martin's eye. Martin also is more than a little bit crooked and he makes things very complicated before Scotty and Patsy can get together.

Edna marries Texan Sam Gladney, operator of a wheat mill. They have a son, who is killed when very young. Edna discovers by chance how the law treats children who are without parents and decides to do something about it. She opens a home for foundlings and orphans and begins to place children in good homes, despite the opposition of "conservative" citizens, who would condemn illegitimate children for being born out of wedlock. Eventually Edna leads a fight in the Texas legislature to remove the stigma of illegitimacy from birth records in that state, while continuing to be an advocate for homeless children.

Follows the stories of the four men of the Kirby family. As Alex's marriage breaks apart, Toby tries desperately to start a family, and Marty tries to kick-start his faded music career as well as find a meaningful relationship with someone his own age, all three must come to terms with their father's mental state. Through all four stories, we uncover a families troubled past, and their struggle towards a reconciled future.
