Puccini’s timeless love story, which includes some of its composer’s most beloved music, has moved generations of opera lovers since its 1896 world premiere. It has also proved incredibly popular with the Met’s global HD audiences and has been featured in three live high-definition transmissions since 2008. The most recent, presented during the 2017–18 season, includes a cast of celebrated young artists. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva is the fragile seamstress Mimì, who instantly falls in love with the passionate poet Rodolfo, sung by tenor Michael Fabiano. Soprano Susanna Phillips and baritone Lucas Meachem trade both spars and kisses as the on-again-off-again lovers Musetta and Marcello, with bass Matthew Rose and baritone Alexey Lavrov rounding out the rambunctious gang of bohemian friends. Maestro Marco Armiliato takes the podium to lead Franco Zeffirelli’s picturesque staging.

In a gray world, Henry created colors. He managed to trap them inside small glass balls to give to his sick wife, but he couldn't save her. From that day on, he began to produce colored balls non-stop, involving his four sons but refusing to share that incredible magic with the rest of the world and arguing with his youngest son, Stick, about it. Twenty years later, Stick returns home because his father is dying. The only hope seems to lie in a very expensive medical device, but only by freeing the color from the glass balls will Stick and Henry be able to reconcile and fill everyone's lives with beauty.

From the Auditorium Parco della Musica – Sala Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, conducted by Antonio Pappano, performs Rachmaninoff’s *The Isle of the Dead* and *Piano Concerto No. 1*, and Sibelius’s *Symphony No. 2*. Alexander Romanovsky is at the piano.

At the Auditorium Parco della Musica, Mozart’s Symphony No. 39, K. 543, and Rossini’s *Stabat Mater* will be performed to mark the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death.

Verdi’s life-long love affair with Shakespeare’s works began with Macbeth, a play he considered to be ‘one of the greatest creations of man’. With his librettist, Francesco Maria Piave, Verdi set out to create ‘something out of the ordinary’. Their success is borne out in every bar of a score that sees Verdi at his most theatrical: it bristles with demonic energy.

In this fifth episode of the series, La torta di Guglielmo, Rossini, is “interviewed” by Gaia de Bernardis, presenting, this time, the cake that gives the clip its title: an apple pie, with cream, sugar, flour and butter. Together with the composer, musicologist Alberto Simoncini and the ever-present Stendhal. Of course, it follows from the title that the opera presented along with the dessert is William Tell, whose libretto was taken from the play of the same name (1804) by Friedrich Schiller, later elaborated by Victor-Joseph-Étienne de Jouy and Hippolyte-Louis-Florent Bis. Its first performance took place at the Paris Opéra on August 3, 1829.

First staged at the Teatro La Fenice in 1846, Verdi’s ninth opera, Attila, returns to the stage of La Scala on December 7th. Following the inauguration of the 2015-2016 Season with Giovanna d’Arco and in anticipation of Macbeth, with Attila Musical Director Riccardo Chailly continues his study of Verdi’s early works, renewing a successful collaboration with creative director Davide Livermore that began with his acclaimed production of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale for La Scala. In this complex opera Verdi experiments with fresh perspectives, featuring spectacular historical settings, introspective angles and moral uncertainties. Attila demands of its performers not only passion and confidence, but also the ability to find subtle accents and psychological nuances.

Antonio Florio, conducting the Orchestra and Choir of the Teatro Regio, tackles Claudio Monteverdi's rich score. The cast includes Roberta Invernizzi, Mauro Borgioni, Francesca Boncompagni, Monica Bacelli, Luigi De Donato, and Luca Tittoto, internationally renowned soloists and recognized experts in the field of Baroque opera.

Part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the death of the Pesaro composer, Il Barbiere di Siviglia staged in Lugano, is the result of a virtuous collaboration that involved Swiss Radio and Television, LuganoInScena and LuganoMusica. The musical part was entrusted to Maestro Diego Fasolis who, together with his Barocchisti ensemble, was involved in the project from the very beginning. Internationally renowned soloists such as Edgardo Rocha (who embodies the Count of Almaviva), Riccardo Novaro (Bartolo), Lucia Cirillo (Rosina), Giorgio Caoduro (Figaro), Ugo Guagliardo (Basilio) and Alessandra Palomba (Berta) performed on stage.

From the Rai Arturo Toscanini Auditorium in Turin, the Rai National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Aziz Shokhakimov, with Seong-Jin Cho on piano, performs works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36.

A village somewhere in the Italian countryside, a wayside inn on a road crossed by the occasional dog. Nothing more. Laurent Pelly’s production presents a deserted landscape in which the turbulent arrival of Doctor Dulcamara causes a sensation. And with good reason! He is said to be the inventor of a mysterious love potion… In opera, love philtres often provoke terrible tragedies. They also provide the pretext for this gentle comedy in which Sergeant Belcore and the timid Nemorino vie with each other for beautiful Adina’s heart. The stage is set! Bring on the music, which, if we are to believe Donizetti, was composed in a fortnight!

A subtle and atmospheric designed-nature film, following a beetle traversing through its newly found home, intertwined with and supplemental to the free electro-acoustic jazz album of the same name, by Cristiano Calcagnile. Complex and accessible from and in many directions, it in-cludes its elements and their displacement along the elusive boundaries of a penetrating dance, that you soon give up wanting to define, and entrusts its appeal to complexity and countless perspectives.

The ambiguities of Verdi’s theatre are particularly clear in his baritone roles, among which is that of Boccanegra, corsair turned doge of Genoa and the troubled observer of the conflicts that tore apart 14th century landowners and peasants. An eminently political opera in which power struggles are interwoven with family conflicts, Simon Boccanegra echoes the life of its composer – the man who championed the cause of Italian unification and overcame the loss of his wife and children. Calixto Bieito, that most Shakespearean of opera directors, brings humanism and truth to a work haunted by gleaming images of the sea.

"Giovanna d'Arco; ossia, la pulzella d'Orléans" is an operatic dramma lirico with a prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera. The opera partly reflects the story of Joan of Arc and is based on a play by Friedrich von Schiller, although claimed by the librettist to be "an entirely original Italian drama." If the thought of Anna Netrebko strutting her stuff in a suit of armour and tin hat sets your factor tingling then this is a must. It's an inconsistent opera but has some quite wonderful music along the way. The rest of the cast is good and the production won't offend either. Get it for Ms Netrebko's incredible performance alone.

In Benoît Jacquot’s production, Manet’s Olympia dominates the stage of the Opéra Bastille. In 1863, the painting caused a scandal: the prostitute awaits her client, her expression proud, her demeanour assured. Is this Violetta? Like Olympia, Verdi’s most celebrated heroine surrenders to the spectator just as she surrenders to love, going so far as to die on stage, a woman’s ultimate sacrifice for her lover. Or might it be the spectator who strips her bare and intrudes upon her privacy, in the image of this milieu of social voyeurism? Whatever the case, these two women regard us with defiance and subjugate those who cannot help but look at them.

Warehouse employee by day, Elvis impersonator by night, Sandro's performance at a nightclub makes such a big impression, that an unlikely manager offers him a tour of China. A tragic tale in which love and filial sentiment battle in a political intrigue around the fascinating character of Simon, a privateer become doge: Simon Boccanegra is one of Verdi’s greatest operas, over which floats the shadow of his admiration for Shakespeare. For this captivating and moving score, the Dijon Bourgogne Orchestra has called upon one of the great Verdi specialists, Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, whose Traviata in 2011 demonstrated his intimate and precise knowledge of the Italian master’s style, and the German stage director Philipp Himmelmann, a regular at Unter den Linden in Berlin and the great European stages.

Four double basses in Sicily, in a wonderful garden, with a program ranging from the most classic classics to contemporary rock. All performed with unparalleled irony and mastery.
