American Harmony

Every year thousands compete in the world's greatest singing competition - that you've never heard of. AMERICAN HARMONY journeys deep into the ultra-obsessive, zany, and heartfelt world of competitive barbershop singing, where passion is equaled only by raw talent, and the reward is not fame or fortune, but simply victory. The film focuses on four quartets vying to win the International Championships of Barbershop Singing, in what turns out to be the closest and most controversial victory in its 70 year history. Max Q is the heavy favorite - a superstar quartet comprised of former Champions. Looking to upset them is OC Times (The Heart-Throbs), Vocal Spectrum (The Rookies) and Reveille, an aging foursome who that has been together for 30 years. In total, fifty quartets duke it out for the coveted gold medal, while facing the pressures of quartet life - from big egos to brain cancer and everything in between. - Written by Colin King Miller

Massenet Thais

There's an uncompromising clarity to Blu-ray audio and video that really does bring the splendour of grand opera right into the living room. So it's all the more frustrating to get a compromised production as the final product. Jules Massenet's 1894 tragedy about a sex goddess humbled by an insistent Cenobite monk isn't produced very often, because of a demanding lead role and some difficult staging issues. But the music is gorgeous from beginning to end. When you have a great diva at centre stage, the three acts go by in a flash.

Pump Up the Volume

Few movements in music have gained as much critical mass as house music. Pump Up The Volume: A History of House Music is a fantastic 2001 documentary about one of the biggest music groundswells in history, which began in basements and ended up at the forefront of pop culture. The film traces house music from its early days as New York disco to its takeover of Europe’s dance scene through fascinating interviews with the people who propelled the movement and rare footage of the clubs where it came of age.

Have You Heard: Jim Croce Live

When Jim Croce died tragically in a plane crash on Sept. 20, 1973, he was just 30 years old and had recently been recognized as one of the most promising artists of his era. In a two-year span, he had eight Top 40 singles, two of which were #1 records and a #1 album. Despite being one of America’s most-loved artists, there has never been a video document of his career. Until now. Have You Heard: Jim Croce Live, features the late singer-songwriter’s performances on television in the early 1970’s. Set in an intimate style akin to today’s popular Unplugged series, the DVD includes performances of such classic Croce songs as "You Don’t Mess Around With Jim," "Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels)," "Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown," many not seen since they were originally broadcast. Jim Croce’s widow, Ingrid, and their son A.J., provide special narration, filled with intimate anecdotes and stirring memories of their lives.

Kazim Koyuncu: Sarkilarla Gectim Aranizdan

Kazim Koyuncu was one of the most important musicians in Turkey, having introduced a universal sound to the Karadeniz Lazuri music. He died during treatment for lung cancer in 2005. It is generally assumed that the Chernobyl disaster was the cause of Koyuncu's cancer, as believed by many citizens of the country. Now, Kazim's documentary is out. More importantly, now it cannot be destroyed. Even after generations, people will know how Kazim was as a person, how he lived the "other way", how he opposed the system and the life itself. —Turhan Karadeniz
