The premiere of Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd in Madrid is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Teatro Real's bicentennial celebrations. Its magnificent libretto, based on the novel of the same name by Herman Melville, tells the story of the sailor Billy Budd: a handsome, loyal, generous, strong, naive, and kind young man whose beauty and personality drive the ship's master-at-arms mad. Unable to control the situation, the master crucifies the naive young man without mercy. This new production by the Teatro Real is being presented for the first time in Madrid, in co-production with the Opéra national de Paris, under the direction of Deborah Warner, one of the great names in stage direction today.

A celebration of Christmas from the stunning, candlelit King's College Chapel, Cambridge. An intimate musical portrait of a reclusive gipsy community in the South of France, which has produced world-famous musicians, yet remains largely unknown to the outside world. The film tells the story of three families, linked through ties of blood and music: the Reyes, famous as the Gipsy Kings; the Balliardo, descendants of Manitas de Plata; and their cousins the Regis, reclusive adepts of flamenco puro. In 1992, The Stranglers became the first rock band to perform at Dartmoor Prison. The concert took place on Friday, September 18th. The band used a £10,000 sound system that was won by a prison warder, according to the Daily Mirror. The event was part of a wider effort to use music as a rehabilitation tool for inmates, with the prison officer behind the competition entry also believing music could be a valuable aid.
