The Star Wars Suite – The Danish National Symphony Orchestra

On June 2017, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) hosted three orchestral concerts called Galaxymphony which included some of the soundtrack from various space and sci-fi movies. This is their version of some of the Star Wars soundtrack across all seven movies. The concert was hosted by Jakob Stegelmann and conducted by Antony Hermus. The performance was orchestrated by The Danish National Symphony Orchestra with help from the 'Camerata' and 'Hymnia' choirs. As told in the video, the host, Jakob Stegelmann, is very passionate about the Star Wars films and therefore evidently the main event of the concert. Therefore, I have shared this extra long video (what a horror it was to render) for you to enjoy.

Burn to Shine - Vol. 6: Atlanta, GA 07.29.2007

The Burn to Shine series is about time. Portraits of bands playing in doomed houses, and the ritual of demolition set to music. These films always had in them a giant underlined subtext of temporality. This newest release, the Atlanta edition, is different in one major way. It is now being released almost a full decade after being filmed. The implied time capsule of the earlier films becomes explicit in this one, allowing us to view well known bands like Mastadon, Deerhunter, The Black Lips, and the Coathangers, in their infancy. Like finding an undeveloped roll of baby pictures, Burn to Shine 6: Atlanta takes us to a place that we forgot even existed.

Cosi Fan Tutte

There are elements of Eurotrash in this outdoor Aix-en-Provence summer opera production. Nevertheless, the splendid singing and acting transform the story, normally treated as farce, into something considerably more serious. As many other critics have noted, the young lovers have not yet sorted everything out as this performance ends. Act One begins with the principal characters running around in the outdoor theater -- while the audience takes it in as if they had been advised to sit back and enjoy the novelty. Very likely they were also asked to refrain from applauding at the end of arias and ensemble pieces, in which the three-hour opera abounds.

Live from Bonnaroo Music Festival 2002

The Bonnaroo Music Festival first turned up on the radar of the mainstream press and music industry when it posted some remarkable numbers in the spring of 2002. Folks in the know wondered how could a first-time event in rural Tennessee sell out all 70,000 of its tickets in a matter of days, with no advertising except email and word of mouth. And why would anyone, with the riots of Woodstock '99 a not-too-distant memory, even attempt such an event. The answer is that Bonnaroo, staged on a green expanse of Tennessee farmland June 21-23 2002, is the apotheosis of a movement that has quietly gained momentum for over a decade, existing as a parallel music universe.

Som & Morabeza

Morabeza - this word, the expression of lack and pain, appears as a response to the pains of the Cabo Verde archipelago. Luciano, a tourist guide to the Châ da Caldeiras volcano, will be our guide. He has never left Fogo Island, and confides to us how he needs to get out of there. His daily chores: walk up the volcano, take care of his grapes and feed the cattle. In his spare time he accompanies his father, on the violin, with his Reco-Reco, a plain comb he scrapes a plastic tube with. The trip he invites us to take with him will also be his tour, an initiation journey in the heart of his country and culture.

La Clemenza di Tito

This is an effective staging, though the set looks medieval and the costumes are modern. It’s well paced, well played, well sung. Jonas Kaufmann is an ideal Tito. His voice is not only beautiful and flexible, it’s also ample, retaining warmth and sweetness when he sings out. The character of Tito is too good to be true, but Kaufmann makes him intense, noble, and beliveable. Vesselina Kasarova is riviting as Sesto. Her voice is gorgeous and multi-colored, her technique exquisite, her immersion in the role complete.
