Optical Sound

Do machines play music? Is there a difference between a dot matrix printer and a record turntable? Optical Sound, Taanila’s 2005 wide-screen interpretation of [The User]’s brutalist sound piece for an array of obsolete printers, depicts the devices ratcheting horizontally together in a stalled symphony, inkjets repeatedly blackening the same area on the page. It is not the blurring of man with machine that lies at the core of this film, but the blurring of the spaces that each has been traditionally obliged to occupy. We disappear into our data streams, which are everywhere and “nowhere” at the same time. (Ken Hollings)

Robot Love

Inspired, in part, by the cover of Megatron Man, Patrick Cowley’s archetypal Hi-NRG album, Robot Love is a celebration of the playful, synthetic, party-driven hedonistic culture of disco. A toy robot is seen dancing in ever-more elaborate and over-stimulating fantasy discos, and drifting and spinning in psychedelic wormholes. Essentially a music video for the Austrian band Ganymed’s absurd 1978 song, the video is playful and opulent, presenting a night at the disco as a mind-expanding trip to an alternate universe.

People Who Do Noise

'People Who Do Noise' is a film about the experimental music of Portland, Oregon. Extensive interviews and intimate performance footage provide an intense portrait of the motivations, emotions, and methods that go into this uncompromising, sometimes brutal musical form. Unwavering in its focus, the film brings to light an art form unfathomable to many, with only the words of the musicians themselves providing any explanation for the pulsating sonic chaos they create. The unflinching cinematic style defies any trend-setting or commercial representation, opting instead for a stark portrayal of a musical underground at its most genuine and vital.
