Prince Hodong

Korea National Opera celebrates the 60th anniversary of its establishment by performing KNO’s first ever performance in 1962, to look back on the past 60 years and contribute to the development of Korea’s cultural arts. It tells the story of Prince Hodong of Goguryeo and Princess Nakrang of an enemy country who falls in love with him. In this tragic story, Hodong strives to reclaim the land of Nakrang, while the princess’s devoted love leads her to destroy the magical drum, Jamyunggo. Prince Hodong reclaims the land because of her support. Her father, King Nakrang is so angry that he kills his daughter.

Etienne's Garden

French musician Étienne de la Sayette has built a distinctive musical world traversing jazz, Ethiopian music, Korean traditional music, and experimental music. In Korea, he gained attention for reinterpreting singer Bae Ho's music. Recently, he formed trio "Tako Toki," experimenting with new sounds using instruments made from industrial waste and recycled materials. He seeks to restore the senses that become music's source through repetitive labor of caring for family, animals, and gardens, aiming to practice harmonious coexistence of human and non-human beings through music.

Metaphysics of Sound

Adopting mainly hand contact printing with photographic enlarger, «Metaphysics of sound» started from September of 2006 and completed in July of 2007. With a 35mm soundtrack image, I made a hand-drawn soundtrack on the 16mm film strip. The sounds were made either by directly contact printing the 35mm sound tracks or collaging the scratch images. According to pattern of sound on the 20% blank of 16mm film strip (normally used as space for optical recording), I edited whole image and made structure of film. Hence the margin is a where image is sound, and vice versa. Later, I studied the sound patterns which varied according to the kinds of images used or the concentration of the image, and made various attempts at rearranging the structure of the sound with the image.

A Solo Recital for One Person

One cellist heads to Africa. There is only one goal of this journey. "Playing a song for just one child" It is for children who have never seen the cello and have never heard the performance. There is no script, no directing, no stage, no rehearsal. As the performance begins, the cello sounds most similar to the human voice. The low, deep, and deep echo is transmitted to the listener through the air. This unfamiliar landscape unfolds without words makes us imagine that "music came before words in the beginning."

The Korean Black Eyes

In 1966, the girl band ‘All Stars’ was formed centered on drummer Kitty (Jun-im Lim), a third-year high school student. They left the country with an understanding that they were going to perform in Southeast Asia. However, they arrived and put on a spot to perform, sometimes risking their lives, for the soldiers on the battlefield of Vietnam. Kitty was recognized for her musical talent, and formed the five-member girl band ‘Korean Black Eyes’ in Bangkok in 1971. The band moved onto Beirut as their base and toured throughout the Middle East and Africa, including Egypt and Nigeria. When they entered Spain in 1973, they went on a concert tour with Cliff Richard, Julio Iglesias, and others. They recorded an album in Portugal at the suggestion of a local producer, but had to quickly escape the country when the military revolution broke out. Wherever they went, including Vietnam and Lebanon, they encountered turbulent scenes of modern history.
