Looking for Don Giovanni

In Baden-Baden, Nayo Titzin follows the producers of the opera Don Giovanni, created for the Innsbruck Festival of 2006. He is looking for a musical truth... What if Mozart's masterwork Don Giovanni had been interpreted in a wrong way for more than two centuries? Conductor René Jacobs, famous for his performance of Così fan tutte and laureate of a Grammy Award for his innovative recording of The Marriage of Figaro, comes back with new ideas on the comprehension of one of the greatest operas of all times. In this relevant documentary, Nayo Titzin clarifies and highlights all the brightness of those melodies and recitatives. Rewarded with many praises in the international press, this production shows the dramaturgical perfection of the "opera of the operas," the absolute of the genre, as Wagner once said. MTV ao Vivo: Fernanda Abreu

Rio's samba-funk singer Fernanda Abreu (1961) prefers the convenience of a recording studio. Yet, in these times of DVDs, the need to do a live album is almost obvious. MTV seduced Fernanda to forget about her principles for just once and taped a special for this occasion created show for their series "MTV Ao Vivo." Fernanda chose to do the show in the city center of her own Rio de Janeiro, at the rather modest but steamy Carlos Gomes theatre (with a capacity of a little under 700 seats). The repertoire should be special, not just her latest show with songs from the most recent album A Paz. So the singer asked her fans on her internet community to send in song lists. On those lists also songs from Fernanda's previous artistic life as singer from the rock band Blitz (1982 – 1986) were chosen. The result is a set-list that gives an overview of the singer's whole career and could very well serve as a kind of "best of."

Morrissey Foretelling The Death of Diana

The sixteen minute video suggests – through an exquisitely constructed montage of found film and video footage, appropriated song fragments, and a meticulously researched voice-over narrative – that Morrissey, the former lead singer of The Smiths, somehow anticipated the 1997 death of Princess Diana via cryptic clues and asides secreted in his lyrics or embedded in images on Smiths’ record sleeves or in their pop videos. Focusing on a track-by-track analysis of The Smiths’ seminal 1986 Album “The Queen Is Dead” Laumann’s film adopts the form of a conspiracy-theory-cum-urban-myth, and despite its labyrinthine twists-and turns, seems to make absolute sense: somehow proving its case, suggesting that perhaps Morrissey – albeit aided and abetted by extraterrestrial forces – did indeed possess clairvoyant powers.

Jewel - Live At Humphrey's By The Bay

Jewel broke on to the national scene in 1995, presenting a softer, more compassionate sound, which differed greatly from some of the other top female singers who were breaking at the same time, notably Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette. Spirit followed in 1998, featuring the smash hit "Hands", proving that Jewel was no one record wonder. On "Live At Humphrey's" Jewel mixes in rare gems such as "Rosy and Mick" and "Everything Breaks Sometime" with many of her hits. Shot in August 2001 in support of the This Way album, Jewel's first-ever live DVD showcases her folk rock style at its absolute finest.
