Dream High

A cinematic rock opera and an homage to teen films, adapted from the stage musical with the same name by Amit Ulman, scripted completely in Hebrew rhymes. Yoav, a teenage boy who lives with his single mother, who struggles to finance them, moves to a new city. He joins Magshimim High, where words hit harder than punches, and your rhyming skills determine the food chain. After the "class king" demolishes him in a rap battle, Yoav is determined to prove himself and win the heart of the "class queen", Maya. He encounters Hamorabi, a legendary former rapper who hides under the image of the school's kiosk cashier. With his help, Yoav turns from an outcast to the Star of the Battles. But as he climbs high, he draws apart from the friends who stood by his side, the girl who really saw him when no one else had, and the authenticity taught to him by Hamorabi. In the National Rap Championship, Yoav will have to choose between chasing the shining lights of fame or staying true to himself.

In his dreams, he sees a beautiful girl named Meher Negar. While staying in his master’s house, one day while playing his flute, he encounters Meher Negar in real life, who was enchanted by his music. Both soon fall in love with each other. Reality however was harsh, as Meher is not an ordinary girl. Rather, she is the daughter of a popular Baijee Khurshid Jan. Her mother has been nurturing her so far only so she can one day be a proud Baijee just like her mother, an idea that Meher profoundly loathes. Torn between yearning for the love of the man she truly loves, to be with Yusuf forever, or upholding her mother’s wish, who raised her without any father — Meher has the chance to choose only one option. Boris Godunov

Nobleman Boris Godunov accumulates power in Russia, first as regent, then as tsar. But the ghosts of the past catch up with him and he ends up losing not only his power but his sanity. Russia sinks ever deeper into a mire of corruption, intrigue and coups. In his grand choral opera, Modest Mussorgsky deals with a theme that offers poignant parallels to today’s world: the extremes to which one man’s thirst for power can lead. The director Kirill Serebrennikov incorporates his own experiences in Russia to present his take on an opera about political turmoil and its consequences. Serebrennikov’s production focuses on the effect on the people of high-stakes political scheming. Conductor Vasily Petrenko makes his Amsterdam debut leading the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. A top-flight cast is led bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, celebrated for his ability to get into the skin of his characters both vocally and dramatically, singing the title role for the first time.

Snow White

To speak of that ballet is very difficult because the theme is so popular as a fairy tale, adapted by Perrault from German folklore and then recuperated from the same folklore by the Grimm brothers, and what's more turned into an unforgettable film by Walt Disney. Angelin Preljocaj was thus trying to break a mould in which that character and her story had been cast seemingly for ever. And it is a success. Because first the setting, the stage direction are very interesting and rich. Rich are the costumes. Rich are the main ideas of the setting like the enormous magic mirror coming down from the sky, or like the deep underground mine turned into a vertical surface on which the seven dwarfs are dancing like dragon-flies on their strings.
