The Ring of the Nibelung: Siegfried

Frank Castorf's Ring makes a feature of unexpected settings and striking images, and here in Siegfried he shows the discussions between the young hero and his foster father Mime in Act I against a background featuring giant heads of Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Mao on a replica of Mount Rushmore. The typical mythical nature and forest world of the second act is replaced in this production by Berlin's Alexanderplatz. The Nothung sword is also replaced, in this production becoming a machine gun. While the direction elicited both approval and disapproval, the vocal performances received wide acclaim.

Sonderzug nach Pankow

On March 25, 2015, Udo Lindenberg's special train to Pankow became a reality. BVG and rbb Radiowelle 88.8 invited the artist to take a ride on U-Bahn line 2. The journey started at the Olympiastadion subway station and ended in Pankow. His song "Sonderzug nach Pankow" (Special train to Pankow) had caused a stir in both the West and the East in 1983. The song was a cheeky request to the comrades to let him perform in the GDR - in vain. When he was allowed to sing for the first and only few times in the GDR in October 1983, his "Sonderzug nach Pankow" was not allowed. In March 2015, Udo Lindenberg traveled to Pankow on a special train on U-Bahn line 2, accompanied by rbb reporters.

Sound of Heimat - Deutschland singt

In the musical road movie, New Zealand musician Hayden Chisholm sets out on a journey of discovery across Germany in search of German folk music. As a stranger with an unbiased view of German culture and an open ear for the lyrics and melodies of modern and traditional musicians, he encounters a lively diversity of regional customs and activities. In Sound of Heimat – Deutschland singt, directors Arne Birkenstock and Jan Tengeler also shed light on the ambivalent attitude toward folk music and the understanding of one's own homeland that is so widespread in Germany. These are topics that have been forgotten in many places due to past ideologization and the "ideal world" of the Musikantenstadl.

Weekend

Wochende (Weekend) is a film initially commissioned by the Berlin Radio Hour. Prior to Weekend, Ruttmann had made numerous celebrated avant-garde films, namely Opus I-IV, and the spectacular Berlin: Symphony of a City (1927). The advent of sound films dawned, and, interested in how spectators perceive sound, he premiered a film without pictures. On June 13th, 1930, the audience took their seats, the lights went down, and the sound of the film was heard. But the screen was completely blank.
