Die Moldau – Smetanas Welterfolg

The story of the birth of Bedřich Smetana's most famous composition, from his first impressions of his stay in Šumava through the images of the Czech landscape through which the Vltava River flows, is told by Jakub Hrůša, chief conductor of the famous German orchestra, in Axel Fuhrmann's documentary film... The Czech composer Bedřich Smetana captured the "sound of the river's springs" as early as 1867 during his stay in Šumava. However, he did not compose "Vltava" until seven years later, when he was already completely deaf. For the individual movements of his world-famous symphonic poem he used various motifs, including the sound of the now extinct Svätojánské streams near Štěchovice. One of the main melodies is said to be taken from the Czech folk song Kočka leze hole, which Smetana transposed into the minor key...

The Metropolitan Opera: The Master-Singers of Nuremberg

James Levine leads a stirring performance of Wagner’s epic comedy, seen in Otto Schenk’s classic production. Baritone Michael Volle stars as Hans Sachs, the cobbler-poet at the heart of this story of love, art, and youth vs. age. Leading Wagnerian tenor Johan Botha is Walther von Stolzing, the young knight whose new ideas upset the traditional ways of the mastersingers, and Annette Dasch sings Eva, the girl he loves, whose hand has been promised to the winner of a singing contest. Johannes Martin Kränzle as the pedantic town clerk Beckmesser, Hans-Peter König as Pogner, Eva’s father, and Paul Appleby as David, Sachs’s apprentice complete the stellar cast.

Xavier Naidoo - Dieser Weg

4.5 million records sold, founding member of Söhne Mannheims and five-time Echo winner: Xavier Naidoo is one of Germany's most successful musicians. Filmmaker Harold Woetzel - himself from Mannheim - accompanied him. He has known Xavier Naidoo for many years and is therefore closer to the artist than almost any other journalist. It is a portrait of a great star, of his incredible love of his homeland and his roots in Baden-Württemberg's second largest city. The film shows how a song lyric is created from a small sound idea, shows Xavier Naidoo's collaboration with his closest friend Michael Herberger in the Mannheim studio. And it shows what an incredible success the idea of turning a group of friends of young multicultural Mannheim musicians into the Sons of Mannheim has become.

Rammstein: The Making of the Album "Reise, Reise"

Behind-the-scenes documentary about the creation of Rammstein's fourth studio album, "Reise, Reise." The album is inspired by one of the deadliest aircraft accidents in history, the Japan Airlines 1985 incident; the last recorded words of the crew can be heard as a bonus song at the beginning of the album. The album artwork features a damaged airplane cockpit with the words "Flugrekorder, Nicht Öffnen" (Flight Recorder, Do Not Open). The cover art is an allusion to the song "Dalai Lama", which deals with an aeroplane accident.
