Annabelle, lead singer for the band Talegunner (Clear For Takeoff), is trying to be a success in show business. Annabelle meets a sleazy producer, Antonio, who promises an appearance on Fred Mulligan's TV show if she will go solo. Annabelle becomes infatuated with Antonio. He decides to take advantage of her. Jealous boyfriend, Nick, hires detective Candy West to find out if Antonio is on the level. Meanwhile, a visitor from another planet is captivated by the rock & roll. A German-language film loosely based on the 1883 operetta Eine Nacht in Venedig (A Night in Venice) by Johann Strauss II. The film was also made into separate Hungarian-language version Egy éj Velencében based on the same screenplay. The two versions were shot simultaneously. As a result, the character of the court jester is transformed into a tragic figure who, in spite of his evident immorality and malice, allows us to sense the devotion he feels for his daughter and his horror at being destroyed by the same despotic world as that which he himself has helped to create.

Mozart was commissioned by Gottfried van Swieten to modernise the score fifty years after Handel’s popular composition (1742), mainly by arranging the wind parts and partially re-composing them. With Marc Minkowski a conductor has been engaged who understands perfectly how to combine baroque style with the tonal possibilities of an orchestra of the classical period like the Musiciens du Louvre. The excellent soloist quartet with Elena Tsallagova, Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Richard Croft and José Coca Loza merges perfectly into Wilson’s enormous flood of images.

Fous de Musique by Jean-Charles Carlus (1957) is a musical comedy featuring Rouiched, Mahieddine Bentir and the famous Bendaoud orchestra. Shot during the Algerian War, the film was not released until after independence and was probably shown in Paris in cinemas intended for immigrant workers around 1967. Johann Sebastian Bach composed his Six Suites for Solo Cello in the early 1720's. Unlike the Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, composed around the same time, there is no extant autograph manuscript. Only four copies exist, of which one made by Anna Magdelena Bach is the standard performing edition Maisky has acknowledged the period instruments style of Bach in these performances. Temple is a guided CGI tour through a ghostly nightclub of evacuated London: a space filled with ethereal dance anthems of the near future. Originally created for a site-specific installation at central London art space 180 The Strand, the video continues his series of virtual worlds that explore the role of memory in an age of simulation. For the exhibition, Lek made a physical version of Temple, the karaoke club originally featured in his feature-length CGI film ‘AIDOL’ (2019), where the fading popstar Diva plans her comeback with an AI ghostwriter. The soundtrack filled the neon-lit room, while screens displayed video game walkthroughs of a new subterranean tunnel that leads virtual ravers from Temple Tube Station to Diva’s club, through the burning rubbish bins of a future-wracked London. Referencing the Japanese meaning of kara-oke⁠—‘empty orchestra’⁠—Temple is a nightclub after the party ends; a place devoid of humans; a sonic architecture filled only with ghosts.

The ambiguities of Verdi’s theatre are particularly clear in his baritone roles, among which is that of Boccanegra, corsair turned doge of Genoa and the troubled observer of the conflicts that tore apart 14th century landowners and peasants. An eminently political opera in which power struggles are interwoven with family conflicts, Simon Boccanegra echoes the life of its composer – the man who championed the cause of Italian unification and overcame the loss of his wife and children. Calixto Bieito, that most Shakespearean of opera directors, brings humanism and truth to a work haunted by gleaming images of the sea.
