Don Carlo

The 2016 Don Carlo production at the Vienna State Opera, directed by Daniele Abbado, offered a modern, minimalist take on Verdi's masterpiece. Abbado emphasized the psychological and political tensions within the story, employing stark sets and subdued colors to evoke a timeless, oppressive atmosphere. Lighting played a crucial role, intensifying the focus on the characters' inner struggles and conflicts. The cast featured René Pape as a commanding and deeply nuanced Philip II, alongside Ramón Vargas as Don Carlo and Anja Harteros, who delivered a luminous and emotionally charged portrayal of Elisabetta.

Barthélémy the last kaina

Coming from a long line of singers, since his father, his grandfather and even his great-grandfather were known for their musical talents, Barthélémy Arakino was born in 1956. He grew up among the Tuamotu and its district of Outumaoro, in Tahiti. The boy learned to write songs from his father, in the Paumotu language of Hao. At nineteen, he went to France for the first time with the army. The success of his first song recorded in the studio, On my return from metropolis, opened the world to him. He was thus able to travel in Europe and the United States, performing on various stages. Barthélémy has long been the only singer to make a decent living from his royalties in French Polynesia. Filmed just before his death in 2015, this film is the only documentary dedicated to this sacred monster.

Mussorgsky: Khovanshchina

Kent Nagano superbly masters the challenges presented by this score, shapes the dynamics with subtle intensity, and casts the score in a mellow glow. As Marfa, the spurned lover of Ivan Khovansky‘s son Andrei, Doris Soffel unfolds such a rich palette of sonorities, from the pathos of the lower ranges to shaded discant heights, that “one is tempted to speak of a Russian mezzo”. The final chorus, which Mussorgsky did not compose, is played in the orchestrally transparent version of Igor Stravinsky – the third great Russian composer who contributed to making “Khovanshchina“ a timeless, gripping stage work. With his stripped-down sets and historicising costumes, director Dmitri Tcherniakov, one of the new voices of contemporary Russian theatre, builds a bridge to the political present. A lesson in history and music!

Neil Young - Haskell Wexler - Teatro Session

In the video John Hanlon, producer/recording engineer says: "Neil just captures the moment, he gives it his all, he goes for the throat. If he is not feeling it, he ain't gonna pick up the guitar. If he's feeling music, then he is recording, he's playing and I am recording it because that's what art is, capturing the movement, all the human imperfections, that is what it is about always. He is the commensurate artist, we get first takes on everything, that's the idea, cuz that's often times the best stuff. If you have to think about it that's not creating, that's thinking, then it doesn't work, it doesn't have that passion."

La Sonnambula

For the first time at the Paris Opera, Natalie Dessay sings one of the most beautiful roles of Italian romanticism. She embodies the modest and charming Amina, this sleepwalker who, escaping from her bedroom, becomes another person as she wanders through the night. This opera by Bellini is a score seemingly written in a daydream, where melody is apparently suspended in time and the heroine's very soul rises to the surface, and where instruments take on transparent tones. At the same time, Bellini portrays the cruelest of worlds – our own – where it is more than difficult for fragility and gentleness to shine past the darker rashness and unfriendliness of the characters.
