During the 80s, Håkon Banken (1949–2018) was one of Norway’s most popular recording artists, selling upwards of half a million records and cassettes and topping the charts for weeks at a time. Today he is mainly remembered by a small group of dedicated fans, who celebrate him for his candid lyrics about his own struggles with mental health. This documentary tells the story of this unique figure in Norwegian popular music through archive material, reconstructions and interviews with some of those who he left an indelible impression on.

As an essay film, Modernist: Usmanbaş both traces the composer's insistence on playing 20th century music in his compositions and visual notation and follows him in the private nursing home where he lived from the age of 100 to 103. While the film records Usmanbaş's curiosity in natural history and the intellectual structure he built between music, science and mathematics with the testimonies of the last years of his life, it also makes references to modernist art in formal terms as a meta attitude.

The Animals, thanks in large part to Eric Burdon's powerful, gritty vocals, were one of the most authentic-sounding rhythm and blues revival groups of the British Invasion.
