Floor Jansen Live at Wacken '25

When Floor Jansen takes the stage, that rare moment of absolute presence arises. Tension fills the air even before the first note is played. Known as the exceptional voice of Nightwish, she has cemented a firm place in the music world outside of the band with her solo debut "Paragon" and songs like "Fire" and "Storm." Her voice combines power and grace, opera and rock, vulnerability and determination; it is an instrument that transforms emotions into sound and then back into emotions. Those who experience her live immediately sense that this isn't just a singer, but an entire story unfolding in music. Her setlist includes tracks by Nightwish and After Forever. Setlist: Wolf and Dog, Noise, Invincible, Storm, Spider Silk, Amaranth, Energize Me, 7 Days to the Wolves, While Love Died, Face Your Demons, Nemo, Fire.

The United States Army Band

On the soundtrack, the US Army Band plays strains of "You're in the Army Now" and a full version of "The Caissons Go Rolling Along" as the films shows us a convoy of trucks and soldiers at work. Then, we go to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial where we see and hear the Band play "Aura Lee," "Pack Up Your Troubles," and "It's a Long Way to Tipperary." Band members also sing the latter songs, but "Love Me Tender" isn't a number one song yet, so "Aura Lee" just gets a musical treatment. The film concludes with "Over There," played and sung, as we see news footage of the Army rolling in to Paris.

Travis: At the Palace

Leading a renaissance of earnestness is the Scottish band Travis, whose December 20, 2003 concert at London's Alexandra Palace finds the young band onstage and on fire before a polite yet enthusiastic crowd of 8,000. It's a huge hall, almost too big for the band's intimate, introspective music. But Travis pulls off a high-energy show built around its 2003 12 Memories album, lighting songwriter Fran Healy's pure-pop cadences with terse arrangements and bursts of overdriven sound. The band plays tight and clean, commendably resisting the tendency among bands to get noisy when they want to sound powerful. If only director Matt Askem better understood this concept. The cameras are always moving, giving us almost no stationary vantage. Still, the picture looks great, with terrific use of black and supersaturated hues emphasizing primary colors. Travis at the Palaceis an exciting record of a band in its prime.

Berliner Philharmoniker: Silvesterkonzert 2024/25

A brilliant New Year with Kirill Petrenko and Daniil Trifonov. "He has everything and more - tenderness, but also demonic. I've never heard anything like it," Martha Argerich marveled at Daniil Trifonov. In the New Year's Eve concert 2024, the star pianist will interpret the full-handled Second Piano Concerto by Johannes Brahms with the Berlin Philharmonic and Kirill Petrenko. In addition, magnificently orchestrated dance works by Richard Strauss will be heard: charming waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier and Salome's Dance with its offensive sensuality.

Frank Zappa & The Mothers: Roxy: The Movie

A Frank Zappa show goes way beyond a mere concert – it is an experience…a flight of improvisation, musicianship, and cerebral cynicism. An unparalleled Composer and Guitarist, Zappa redefined rock n roll paradigms by introducing into the mix his favorite influences from classical music, jazz, blues, Doo-wop, traditional and non-traditional music. And he did so with unparalleled humor and audacity. But it was the music itself that influenced generations of musicians and, quite frankly, blew minds. Roxy: The Movie, filmed over three nights in December 1973, at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, CA, is a powerful display of this experience, and reveals what made him such a pioneering musical revolutionary.

Tannhäuser and the Singers' Contest at Wartburg Castle

TANNHÄUSER UND DER SÄNGERKRIEG AUF WARTBURG is a grand opera by Richard Wagner in three acts. After experiencing boundless sensuality and freedom with the fun-loving Venus (soprano), the singer Tannhäuser (Tenor) finds it impossible to conform to the cultured setting of his betrothed Elizabeth (soprano), who loves him. During a singing contest, Tannhäuser describes the affair with Venus as the ultimate love experience and because of that, he is cast out from the established society. Thanks to Elizabeth's intervention, he is allowed to undertake a pilgrimage to the Pope to ask for the Holy Father's pardon. If the Pope accepts to forgive him, he would be allowed to take back his place in society. Tannhäuser accepts. But fate will not allow him to meet with his beloved Elizabeth again in this life. This is a recording of the legendary staging by Götz Friedrich for the 1978 Bayreuth Festival conducted by Sir Colin Davis.
